New London police said they have obtained a warrant for the arrest of a man suspected in a recent fatal stabbing.

NEW LONDON, CT — New London police said they have obtained a warrant for the arrest of a man suspected in a recent fatal stabbing. The incident occurred Sunday afternoon, and was the city's third homicide to occur in less than two weeks, according to police.

Police said an arrest warrant for Jerome Hudson, 28, was obtained by detectives for the stabbing death of 27-year old Travon Brown, according to a release. The warrant is for the criminal charge of murder, police said.

Police said Hudson is currently in custody with the Connecticut Department of Corrections on unrelated criminal charges. The suspect was arrested by New London police Sunday for narcotic-related charges and has remained in custody since, police said.

Police also thanked the New London County State’s Attorney’s Office, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the DESPP Division of Scientific Services for their assistance in the investigation.

"When crimes of violence are committed in our community, NLPD will be relentless in our pursuit of
justice for our citizens," Captain Ben M. Wright said in a release. "Thank you to all who continue to support us in our mission to keep New London safe."

Police said the New London Emergency Communications Center received a call Sunday at approximately 2:30 p.m. reporting a male stab victim at a residence in the area of Grand Street and Elm Street.

Police located a man with stab wounds lying inside the home, police said. Medical attention was immediately initiated on the victim, who was subsequently transported to L+M Hospital, police said.

He was later pronounced deceased by a hospital physician, police said.

Mayor Michael Passero recently released a statement after a fatal shooting and stabbing occurred over a weekend. On Saturday, Dec. 9, police said a young man was shot and killed on Orchard Street in New London. A day later, police said a man was fatally stabbed to death on Tilley Street.

"Our city experienced unacceptable violence in unrelated incidents this past weekend that resulted in the deaths of two people," Passero said in his statement, which was released Monday, Dec. 11. "These two most recent deaths follow a similar violent death just a few weeks ago at a Blackhall Street residence. As a community, we deeply regret the loss of life and express our condolences to the families and friends of the victims."

Passero also highlighted the city's safety in spite of these recent successive acts of violence.

"Thankfully, in each of these tragic incidents, the general public was never at risk," Passero said in his statement, which was released last Monday. "Our city is safe and the New London Police Department has done a remarkable job investigating and swiftly resolving these crimes. Moreover, beyond merely reacting to violence of this sort when it happens, city staff has been proactively engaged in developing methods to prevent this type of violence."

Passero said in his statement city officials have assembled an interagency, multijurisdictional initiative to identify the underlying social factors that lead to incidences of violence like the incidents this past weekend.

"This effort engages our police, fire prevention, health, human services and building departments in a collaborative effort that will identify causes and formulate methods and policies to mitigate conditions that lead to this type of violence," Passero said. "This string of recent tragedies is, of course, discouraging to our efforts. The goal of our task force in the coming weeks will be to completely deconstruct the circumstances that led to these two latest violent confrontations and to redouble our efforts to identify measures that could help to prevent future violence of this nature. The city administration is committed to stemming violence of this type in our community and continuing our overall quality of life campaign."
