Baby Opossum Rescued From Injured Mother's Pouch

Sadly, the mother did not survive her injuries, New London Animal Control said. Below are tips if you find an injured or orphaned opossum.

New London’s Animal Control officer responded to a call for a severely injured opossum on Thursday, June 11.

“Sadly, mom didn’t make it, but I was able to rescue one little guy out of her pouch,” New-London AnimalControl said via Facebook. “He is off to an awesome rehabber who will raise him until he’s old enough to make it on his own.”

The Opossum Society shared the following tips on what to do if you find an injured or orphaned opossum.

  • Check the surrounding area to make sure you’ve located all animals
  • Listen for a sneeze-like sound baby opossums make to call for their mother
  • Contact a wildlife rehabilitator or animal control for assistance; Check to make sure they don’t euthanize all opossums
