Bear Sightings On The Rise In New London County: Report

The southeastern part of the state has seen an increase in bear sightings already this year.

NEW LONDON COUNTY — Bear sightings are up in southeastern Connecticut, The Day of New London reported. So far in 2024, there have been 52 sightings in New London County.

The highest among county towns is Waterford, which had 18 sightings.

The numbers in Southeastern Connecticut still aren't as high as some other spots in the state. As of April 8, Avon had 55 bear sightings and Simsbury was at 53.

Last year, bears were reported from 165 of Connecticut's 169 municipalities.

State Department of Energy and Environmental Protection officials have urged residents to take steps to avoid attracting bears, including securing bird feeds and trash and cleaning grills.
