Bears Beat Maritime Rivals In Fourth Straight Win
Coast Guard defeats Massachusetts Maritime on diamond

The Coast Guard Academy managed to eke out a win over the Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Tuesday with a late game run. The following information was provided by the Coast Guard Academy Athletic Department:
Sophomore Cameron Carroll's two-out RBI single in the top of the ninth broke a 6-6 tie and Coast Guard won its fourth straight beating Massachusetts Maritime 7-6 in a non-conference game.
The Bears have now eclipsed their win total from last season, improving to 13-7 on the season after going 12-18 last season. The loss snaps a five-game winning streak for the Bucs, who suffered their first loss at home this season and drop to 5-4 overall.
The visiting Bears (13-7) rallied from a 3-1 deficit to take a 6-3 advantage with a four-run sixth inning outburst, as a two-run single by sophomore Riley Beecher, an RBI double by sophomore Nolan Gallagher and a three-base error gave the visitors the three-run cushion.
The host Buccaneers answered back with a pair of tallies in the bottom of the frame to pull back to within one by scoring on a wild pitch and a throwing error, and Massachusetts Maritime evened matters in the seventh when senior Nick Levitre led off the inning with a triple and scored on sophomore Zachary Sullivan’s sacrifice fly.
Coast Guard’s deciding ninth inning rally began when junior Eddie Kalankiewicz led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, and after the next two Bears were retired, Carroll lined a 2-2 pitch into right for the game-winning hit to extend the visitors’ winning streak to four straight.
Coast Guard grabbed a 1-0 third inning lead when sophomore Joe Petry tripled and scored on a throwing error, but the Buccaneers took advantage of a three-base error to score twice in the bottom of the frame for a 2-1 lead, and the hosts extended that margin to 3-1 in the fourth on an RBI double off the bat of junior William Shouldice.
The Bears cut their deficit to one in the fifth on an RBI groundout by senior Graham Sherman, setting up the late inning fireworks that saw the squads combine for eight runs.
Sherman, Gallagher and Beecher each had two hits as part of an 11-hit attack for Coast Guard, as senior Jesse Karr picked up his third victory in four decisions by working a scoreless eighth for the Bears.
Sophomore Tyler Vieira retired the side in order in the ninth for his fourth save for the visitors, as sophomore Curt Barrett allowed an earned run over the first five frames.
Sullivan, Shouldice, senior Michael Vargas and sophomore Tyler Genereux each collected two hits as part of a 12-hit attack in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as freshman Nick Thomas suffered the setback on the mound for the Buccaneers in relief of senior Corey Murphy, who allowed four earned runs and fanned three over 5 1/3 innings for the hosts.
