Blaze Breaks Out At New London Home, Displaces 2, Fire Officials Say

The fire originated in a chimney on the first floor, spreading to the surrounding wall spaces.

NEW LONDON, CT — A fire broke out at a New London home Monday morning, displacing two residents, according to a statement from the fire department.

Firefighters responded to a structure fire at 724 Williams St. at 9 a.m.

Crews arrived to find smoke and fire emanating from a confined wall space on the home's first floor.

"Firefighters encountered challenging weather conditions, as snow impacted firefighting operations and slowed access to the property," fire officials said. "Despite these challenges, crews quickly worked to confine and extinguish the fire, preventing it from spreading further throughout the residence."

The fire originated in a chimney on the first floor, spreading to the surrounding wall spaces. The home sustained moderate damage.

No injuries were reported.

Mutual aid was provided by the Waterford Fire Department, Naval Submarine Base, and Groton Ambulance.

The American Red Cross is helping two people who were displaced by the fire.

The New London Fire Marshal’s Office determined the cause of the fire to be failure of the fireplace liner due to deterioration, which allowed fire and heat to spread from the firebox into adjacent concealed wall spaces.
