Camels Split With Ephs

Conn College, Williams each take a lacrosse victory

Connecticut College split a pair of lacrosse games with Williams College, winning the men's competition but losing the women's one. The following information was provided by William Tomasian, sports information director at Connecticut College:

Men's Lacrosse: Conn College 11, Williams College 2

Senior Eric Doran (Pennington, N.J.) recorded a hat-trick with three goals to lead the Connecticut College men's lacrosse team to an 11-2 NESCAC victory against Williams College on the artificial turf at Silfen Field on Tuesday.

With the win, the Camels improve to 3-6 with a 1-4 record in the NESCAC, while the Ephs fall to 1-6 overall with a 1-4 mark in league action.

Sophomore Mike Giambanco (Massapequa, N.Y.) tallied two goals and assisted on a third marker for the Camels. Stephen Eicher (Northport, N.Y.) chipped in with two scores, while sophomore John Lyons (Barrington, R.I.) added a goal and an assist for Connecticut College.

Chuck Czerkawski (Cohasset, Mass.) won 10-of-14 face-offs and collected a team-best eight ground balls for the winning side.

Junior John Lenehan (Hingham, Mass.) finished with six stops in the victory. Rob Moccia (Malvern, Pa.) contributed one save in relief duty.

The Camels disrupted the transition game for Williams with a physical ride, limiting the visitors to just a 30% success rate (6-for-20) in clearing situations.

Junior Mike Ryan (Darien, Conn.) tallied a goal and an assist in the loss for Williams. Henry Mills (Brunswick, Maine) made six saves in relief of Evan Cohen (Syosset, N.Y.), who stopped one shot in the first quarter of play.

The Camels jumped on the Ephs early in this one. Lyons opened the scoring with a nifty looking wraparound move 61 seconds into regulation. Doran buried a runner 54 seconds later to make it a 2-0 game.

Later on in the first, Tyler Corcoran (Simsbury, Conn.) split a pair of defenders to finish with a low shot at the 5:06 mark. Drew Green (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) made it a 4-0 game, scoring on a feed from Giambanco with 28 seconds left in the quarter.

The Ephs finally got on the board with a score from Will Stewart (South Salem, N.Y.) at 14:14 of the second.

But Doran answered with an unassisted marker at the 8:52 mark that ignited the Camels on a 6-0 run.

The hosts continued to pull away for the 11-2 win.

Connecticut College out-shot the visitors 34-to-18 in the triumph and held a 36-to-28 advantage in ground balls.

Women's Lacrosse: Williams 14, Conn College 11

The 16th ranked Williams College women's lacrosse team (5-4, 2-3 NESCAC) earned a 14-11 victory against Connecticut College (3-6, 0-5 NESCAC) at Renzie Lamb Field Wednesday.

Senior Abby Hill (Stoneham, Mass.) scored four goals in the setback for the Camels. Libby Nichols (Baltimore, Md.) and Katelyn Driscoll (Peabody, Mass.) scored two goals each.

Connecticut College dominated the opening minutes of the half, scoring two goals in the opening eight minutes. Williams quickly returned fire, scoring six goals in a to gain the lead. Junior Meera Sivalingam scored the Ephs' first goal at 21:41,with Emily Jablonski'14, assisted by Margie Fulton'12 scoring moments later. Emily Whicker'13 won the draw following Sivalingam's goal, moving the ball up field to Fulton. The resulting sustained pressure led to Jablonski's goal.

A few minutes later Rebecca McGovern scored her first goal of the game off a free-position shot, making the score 3-2 to in the Ephs favor. A minute later Fulton received the ball in the 8 from Jablonski, spinning to beat her defender and sending a rocket over the Camel keeper's shoulder. A second goal from McGovern and one from Kaitlin Ellis gave the Ephs their fifth and sixth goals, respectively.

Connecticut College tried to narrow the lead with 11:20 remaining in the first half. The Camels scored two more goals to bring the score within two. Following Connecticut College's goal at 8:17, McGovern scored off a free position shot, giving her a hat trick. Classmate Jablonski scored two minutes later making the score 8-5. Connecticut College returned fire, with senior Abby Hill scoring her second and third goals of the game to bring the game within one. Williams, however, had the last word of the half, with McGovern, assisted by Anne Marie Burke, scoring with only 8 seconds left to play.

Williams brought their first half momentum into the second half with sophomore Nicolle Perry scoring two back-to-back goals giving the Ephs an 11-7 lead. Connecticut College scored with just under 21 minutes left to play. The game remained scores less for six minutes, but McGovern struck again with 15:54 left to play, putting away her fifth goal on a back-door goal over the head of Camel Caitlin Cataldo.

Connecticut College narrowed the lead to one, scoring two unanswered goals in the ninth minute of the half and one with 3:26 remaining. The Ephs quickly regained momentum. With 2:28 remaining Fulton and Whicker combined to catch Cataldo out of her net scoring on the empty net. Freshman duo Jablonski and McGovern worked together to score the 14th goal a minute later. The Ephs stalled, successfully killing off the final minute and a half to win 14-11.
