Wins in soccer and cross country

The Coast Guard Academy swept New York Maritime College in a soccer game on Saturday, and also had individual and team victories in a cross country invitational on Saturday. The following information was provided by Jason Southard, sports information director at the Coast Guard Academy:

Women's Soccer: Coast Guard 6, New York Maritime 0

Freshman Elyse Bobczynski scored the first two goals of her career and the Bears had five different goal scorers as Coast Guard beat New York Maritime College 6-0 in a non-conference game.

Bobczynski scored the only goal the Bears would need in the ninth minute with classmate Holly Moore assisting, her team-high third of the season. Bobczynski gave the Bears a 2-0 lead with a goal in the 16th minute with senior Shannah Shelton assisting.

Shelton increased the lead to 3-0 on a free kick from 25 yards away in the 24th minute before freshman Brittany Zirulinick scored her first career goal on a breakaway with just two seconds left in the first half for a 4-0 edge at the break. Junior Kelsey Freeman assisted on the final goal of the half for Coast Guard.

Sophomore Rachel Deschene scored in the 56th minute with Moore picking up her second assist of the game and team-high fourth of the season before freshman Michaela Baca’s first career goal in the 83rd minute closed the scoring.

Coast Guard beat Maritime 6-0 for the second straight season to improve to 2-1 on the season while the Privateers drop to 1-3-1 on the year.

Senior Mary Mills (2-1) needed to make just one save to register her first shutout of the season as the Bears outshot Maritime 32-1.

Men's Cross Country

Senior Trevor Siperek placed third overall as the Bears had four runners in the top nine leading the Bears to a first place finish at the season-opening Smith Invitational.

Siperek finished in 16:43.08. Sophomore Gary Ezzo (16:55.54) was sixth, senior Kevin O'Brien (17:05.47) was eighth while junior Thomas Heikkinen (17:10.26) placed ninth.

Coast Guard won with 33 points while Springfield was second with 43 points.

Women's Cross Country

In her collegiate debut, freshman Bethany Gollin was the overall winner leading Coast Guard to a second place finish among 16 teams at the season opening Smith College Invitational.

Coast Guard finished with 34 points, Wellesley College took first with 29.

Gollin took an early lead and held it as she traversed the Smith 5K course in 19:43. Coast Guard second finisher was sophomore Meghan Kalinowski placing 6th overall running 20:29.

Next in scoring place was junior Sarah Blatt who was 8th overall with a time of 20:34: Rounding out the top five Coast Guard finishers were two freshman, Mary Hazen and Ellie Wu placing 9th and 10th both running 20:34.

Also posting strong performances were freshman Cameo Ulbricht (21:07; 17th), senior Katie Schumacher (21:37; 25th), and freshman Kendall Auth (21:37; 26th).

Next weekend, Coast Guard will travel to compete at the UMass Darmouth Invite.
