Bears win in tennis and volleyball competitions, lose soccer game to cross-road rivals
The Coast Guard Academy earned a men's tennis victory on Tuesday as well as a volleyball win. The Bears could not get a goal against Connecticut College in a women's soccer game, however (see here). The following information was provided by Jason Southard, sports information director at the Coast Guard Academy:
Men's Tennis: Coast Guard 8, Salve Regina 1
Coast Guard swept all three doubles matches on their way to an 8-1 victory over host Salve Regina University.
The loss drops the Seahawks to 0-2 to start the year, while the Bears improved to 2-1 overall with the win.
Coast Guard junior Blake Maurer and sophomore Chris Hoffman combined for an 8-3 victory in number one doubles. Sophomore Josh Fischer and freshman David Blystone paired up for an unblemished 8-0 victory at the number two doubles position, while seniors Matt Faha and Nick Martin earned an 8-2 victory at number three doubles.
Salve Regina junior Aaron Isch earned the lone victory for the Seahawks during his thrilling number two singles match. After losing the opening set to Martin by a score of 6-2, Isch bounced back to take the second set 6-4, before winning the tie breaker 10-8.
Maurer was victorious for the Bears in his number one singles match (6-2, 6-1), while Fischer (6-0, 6-0), Hoffman (6-1, 6-2), Blystone (6-0, 6-2), and Faha (6-2, 6-0) were victorious from the three, four, five, and six positions respectively.

Volleyball: Coast Guard 3, Smith 0
Sophomore Kelsey DePorto had 15 kills, eight blocks and three aces leading Coast Guard to a 3-0 win over Smith College in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match.
Coast Guard won by game scores of 25-14, 25-16 and 25-18.
The Bears, playing just their second home game of the season, after 11 straight on the road, improve to 10-3 overall and 3-1 in the NEWMAC. Smith drops to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in conference action.
