Coast Guard advances in volleyball

The Coast Guard Academy had a semifinal win in an Eastern College Athletic Conference semifinal, while the cross country running teams participated in the New England Division III Championship. The following information was provided by Jason Southard, sports information director at the Coast Guard Academy:

Volleyball: Coast Guard 3, Keene State 0

Junior Keriann Mason had a match-high 11 kills and a team-high eight digs while sophomore Kelsey DePorto had ten kills and a match-high eight blocks leading top-seeded Coast Guard to a 3-0 win over fourth-seeded Keene State College in the semifinals of the ECAC Division III New England Volleyball Championship.

Coast Guard improved to a perfect 12-0 at home this season and 25-6 overall winning by game scores of 25-14, 25-19, 25-23. Keene State, the defending ECAC New England champions, finish the season 19-14.

The Bears jumped out to a 9-2 edge in the opening game and cruised to the 25-14 win.

In the second game, Coast Guard once again got off to a big lead early this time the Bears led 10-2 and increased the lead to 17-7. Keene State did not go quietly using a 10-4 spurt to cut the deficit to 21-17 before Coast Guard scored four of the final six points for the 25-19 win.

The final game was back-and-forth. Keene led 10-8 before Coast Guard had a 16-14 edge and the Owls then tied the match 16-16. Neither team took more than a one-point lead with the match being tied at every point until Coast Guard scored back-to-back points for a 24-22 lead and closed out the match with a 25-23 win.

Junior Karen Matic had ten kills and a team-high 14 assists, junior Catherine Walker added seven kills in the win.

Also for the Bears freshman LeighAnne Brazier had six kills and six blocks while classmate Elise Sako had a team-high 12 assists.

Senior Bridget O’Bryant led the Owls with six kills and ten digs while classmate Kristen Girard also had six kills. Junior Alex Lehocky had a match-high 13 digs for Keene State while senior Laurie Whalen had a match-high 20 assists to close out her collegiate career.

Cross Country Running

Senior Trevor Siperek was the top Coast Guard finisher as he placed 57th overall and the Bears were 15th of 48 teams at the New England Division III Championship.

Siperek finished the 8K course in 25:56.18 while sophomore Gary Ezzo was the second Coast Guard finisher, placing 75th with a time of 26:21.07.

The next four Coast Guard finishers were all seniors as Kevin O’Brien was 92nd (29:39.36), Joe Hill was 105th (26:52.95), Myles McCarthy finished 117th (27:04.42) and Devin Quinn placed 131st with a time of 27:04.72.

In the women's competition, freshman Beth Gollin was the top Bear finisher as she placed 55th overall and Coast Guard was 13th of 51 teams.

Gollin finished the 6K course in 22:58.79 while sophomore Meghan Kalinowski was the second Coast Guard runner to cross the finish line placing 82nd overall with a time of 23:28.97.

Freshman Ellie Wu was 88th (23:34.44), junior Sarah Blatt finished 101st (23:55.82), freshman Kendall Auth was 123rd (24:10.84) while senior Katie Schumacher placed 134th with a time of 24:19.95.

The 13th place finish by Coast Guard as its best since 2006 when the Bears placed tenth overall.
