Coast Guard Earns Single Win On Friday
Bears have setback in Florida as baseball and softball team picks up one victory in four games
The Coast Guard Academy picked up a single win in Florida games on Friday, as the softball team shut out Simpson College. The softball team lost to the Catholic University of America, while the baseball team dropped games against Widener University and Neumann University. The following information was provided by Jason Southard, sports information director at the Coast Guard Academy:
Baseball: Widener 5, Coast Guard 3; Neumann 12, Coast Guard 2
Coast Guard dropped a pair of games at the Gene Cusic Classic as the Bears lost 5-3 to Widener and 12-2 to Neumann.
Coast Guard left the bases loaded in both the eighth and ninth innings of the 5-3 loss to Widener in the first game of the day.
Senior Eddie Kalankiewicz had two of the Bears seven hits in the opener that was tied 3-3 before Widener scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.
Coast Guard had tied the game 3-3 when Kalankiewicz led off the fifth with a triple and scored on an RBI by junior Tyler Babkiewich. Junior Mike Massaro accounted for the Bears other two runs with a sacrifice fly in the first and an RBI single in the third which tied the game 2-2.
Junior Nate Toll (0-2) started and took the loss after working a solid six innings, allowing seven hits and five runs, just three earned while walking four and striking out four. Junior Curt Barrett threw a pair of scoreless innings in relief allowing just one hit.
In the second game, Neumann scored seven runs in the fourth turning a 3-2 lead into a 10-2 advantage.
Junior Derek Petty (0-1) worked just 3 2/3 innings and was touched for ten hits and eight earned runs to take the loss. Juniors James Diddell and Mike Packer both pitched well out of the bullpen for Coast Guard. Diddell went 3 1/3 innings and allowed just two hits and a pair of earned runs while Packer pitched a hitless inning.
Freshmen Mike Shannon and Tim Betts each had the first two hits and first RBI’s of their career in the game while junior Ed Sella also had two hits for Coast Guard.
The Bears, who drop to 3-4 on the season, play their final game down South on Saturday vs. Salem State before returning home on Sunday.

Softball: Catholic 6, Coast Guard 5; Coast Guard 4, Simpson 0
Coast Guard split a pair at the Rebel Games losing to Catholic 6-5 before shutting out Simpson 4-0.
In the opener, pinch hitter Allie Cain’s RBI bloop single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh gave Catholic a walk off win.
Coast Guard took a 2-0 lead in the first on freshman Jesse Richardson’s first career homer before Catholic scored four runs in the third on five singles and an error.
The Bears cut the deficit to 4-3 in the fifth on an RBI single by freshman Chloe Harmon before Catholic responded with a run in the home half for a 5-3 lead.
Coast Guard scored twice in the top of the seventh to tie the game as junior Holli Bastinck singled and junior Stacia Sarwinski doubled and both scored on a long fly ball off the bat of Maddie Buchert that was mishandled in the outfield.
Senior All-American Hayley Feindel allowed 11 hits and struck out 12 while not walking a batter in taking the loss.
In game two, Feindel fired a four-hit shutout with four strikeouts to pick up the win.
Coast Guard scored all four runs in the fourth as Richardson and Bastinck delivered RBI doubles before Harmon hit her first collegiate homer, a two-run shot to close the scoring.
The Bears are 5-3 and will play two more games on Saturday at the Rebel Games before returning home.
