Coast Guard Prevails, Mitchell Falls In Florida
Local teams play in softball, baseball games in Sunshine State
Both the and competed in the Rebel Games in Kissimee, Fla. on Monday. The Coast Guard remained undefeated with two wins, while Mitchell lost two games. In baseball action in Fort Myers, the Coast Guard Academy defeated the Merchant Marine Academy. The following information was provided by the Coast Guard Academy Athletic Department and David Longolucco, sports information director at Mitchell College:
Softball: Coast Guard 2, Ursinus 0; Coast Guard 1, Greensboro 0
Junior All-American Hayley Feindel fired a pair of shutouts to become the Bears’ all-time wins leader as Coast Guard, ranked 16th nationally, beat Ursinus 2-0 and Greensboro 1-0 at the Rebel Games to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Feindel now has 70 career wins passing Katie Wunderlich who won 68 games from 1998-2001. Feindel is 70-16 in her career and now 4-0 this season with three shutouts.
In the opener, Feindel scattered four hits and struck out 12 while walking a pair. The Bears scored both runs in the third as sophomore Summer Dupler was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Devin Fellman. Junior Maddie Buchert reached on an error, which scored Dupler before Holli Bastinck's two-out RBI double plated Buchert.
Sophomore Megan Cook added a double in the fourth inning, the only hit besides Bastinck’s double as the Bears finished with two hits.
In the second game, senior All-American Frederick’s solo homer in the fourth accounted for the only run of the game as the Bears were again held to just two hits, but Feindel was even better allowing just one hit while striking out 11 and walking two.
Greensboro's best threat came in the bottom of the seventh when their first two batters reached base on an error and a walk. Following a popped up bunt to Bastinck and a fly ball to Cook in left field, Feindel retired the final hitter on a ground ball to Fellman at shortstop who flipped to Jamie Kim to record the game's final out at second base.

Softball: Emmanuel College 9, Mitchell 1; Catholic University 15, Mitchell 2
The Mitchell College softball team dropped a pair of games to open the 2011 season at the Rebel Spring Games on Monday afternoon. The Mariners lost by finals of 9-1 to Emmanuel College and 15-2 to Catholic University.
Senior Jen Bordonaro (Winsted, Conn./Gilbert School) paced Mitchell on the day, going a combined 3-for-6 over the two games with a triple and two runs scored. Juniors Nikki Hoxie (Winsted, Conn./Gilbert School) and Brittany Zaccaria (White Plains, N.Y./Maria Regina) each finished with a RBI on opening day to fuel the offense.
Mitchell's opponents each used third-inning rallies to break the games open. Emmanuel scored five runs in its frame to take a 7-1 lead while a 10-run eruption from Catholic gave it a 13-1 edge. The Mariners didn't help their own cause on defense and committed four errors in each game.
Mitchell returns to action with a pair of games on Tuesday at the Rebel Spring Games. The Mariners will face Geneva College at 9 a.m. and Bluffton University at 11 a.m.

Baseball: Coast Guard 12, Merchant Marine 10
Sophomore Nate Toll allowed just four hits and three unearned runs in seven solid innings work and Coast Guard held off a late Merchant Marine charge to beat the Mariners 12-10 at the Gene Cusic Classic.
Coast Guard behind the solid outing by Toll in which he fanned four and did not walk a batter and multiple hit games from a trio of sophomores Joe Petry, Ed Sella and Tyler Babkiewich led 12-3 after seven innings.
The Bears scored twice in the first on an RBI double by Babkiewich and an RBI fielders choice by sophomore Mike Massaro and added two more in the third on an RBI single by Babkiewich, who later scored on a wild pitch for a 4-0 lead.
Coast Guard scored twice in the fifth on an RBI double by sophomore Riley Beecher and a sacrifice fly by Massaro for a 6-1 lead.
The Bears added three in the sixth with Petry and Babkiewich driving in runs for a 9-2 edge and three more in the seventh as Sella and Petry each delivered an RBI singles for the 12-3 lead.
Merchant Marine got to the Bears bullpen for six runs, three earned, in the sixth to climb back into the game at 12-9. Sophomore Tyler Vieira came on with the tying run at the plate and got a ground out to get out of the inning and allowed and unearned run in the ninth to pickup his first save of the season.
Babkiewich finished 2 for 2 with a single, double, sacrifice fly, two stolen bases, three runs scored and three RBI’s while Petry scored two runs and drove in a pair in the win
The Bears even their record at 2-2 on the season while the Mariners drop to 2-1.
