Coast Guard Splits Baseball, Softball Games

Bears win one each in Sunday action

The Coast Guard Academy split two doubleheaders on Sunday as the Bears took on Castleton State College and Manhattanville College. The following information was provided by Jason Southard, sports information director at the Coast Guard Academy:

Baseball: Coast Guard 5, Castleton 4; Castleton 4, Coast Guard 3

Coast Guard scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the 11th to win the opener 5-4 before Castleton salvaged a split of the non-conference doubleheader with a 4-3 win in the night cap.

Coast Guard was leading 3-1 into the seventh and final inning of the opener before the Spartans scored twice with two outs on an RBI triple by junior Ryan Zielinski and an RBI single by sophomore Joe Borowski off Coast Guard closer Tyler Vieira to tie the game 3-3.

The game stayed tied at 3-3 until the top of the 11th when Zielinski’s RBI double scored senior David Brandt, who doubled with two out as Castleton took a 4-3 lead.

In the home half of the 11th, junior Tyler Babkiewich reached on an error, junior Mike Massaro had an infield single and junior Nolan Gallagher walked to load the bases before junior Eric Gerken’s grounder to second was misplayed allowing two runs to score giving Coast Guard the win.

Vieira (3-1) worked the final six innings and allowed eight hits and three runs, all earned while walking two and striking out seven to get the win. Junior James Diddell was outstanding as the pitched the first five innings allowing just a pair of singles while walking four and striking out two.

Junior Tyler Erickson (0-2) was the tough luck loser as he went the distance for Castleton working 10 1/3 innings allowing just seven hits and five runs, three earned, while walking four and striking out six.

Zielinski was 4 for 5 with a pair or RBI’s while junior Cameron Curler had a pair of hits for the Spartans in the game one loss.

Massaro had two of the Bears seven hits in the opener.

Senior Dakota Aker (1-1) went the distance in game two for Castleton allowing eight hits and three earned runs while walking six and striking out nine.

Coast Guard took a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI double by junior Ed Sella before Castleton scored all four of its runs in the third as Borowski and sophomore Allen White had back-to-back one-out RBI singles before sophomore Matt McNamee’s two-out, two-run single pushed the lead to 4-1.

The Bears scored two in the home half of the third on and RBI single by Sella before Gallagher, who walked, later scored on a wild pitch.

Coast Guard left the bases loaded in the sixth and Sella led off the bottom of the seventh with a double, his third hit of the game, but was left stranded.

Freshman Anthony Martin (1-2) started for Coast Guard and was touched for nine hits and four earned runs with four walks and seven strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. Senior Chris Martin threw two hitless innings before classmate Nick Peters got two outs in the seventh.

McNamee was 3 for 3 while Borowski had two hits for the Spartans in game two and junior Joe Petry had two hits for the Bears in the game two loss.

Coast Guard is 7-7 overall while Castleton is now 2-7 on the season.

Softball: Coast Guard 5, Manhattanville 3; Manhattanville 9, Coast Guard 5

Coast Guard, ranked 17th nationally, split a non-conference doubleheader with Manhattanville as the Bears won the opener 5-3 before the Valiants won the nightcap 9-5.

In the opener, Coast Guard built a 5-0 lead scoring three runs in the fourth as freshman Jesse Richardson had an RBI double, junior Stacia Sarwinski had a sacrifice fly and the Bears scored on an error.

In the sixth, the Bears added two more on a two-run single by freshman Erin Lisko for a 5- 0 lead.

Freshman Laura Montalto hit a three-run homer with two outs in the top of the seventh to break up the shutout.

Junior Catherine Walker went the distance for the Bears and scattered seven hits and allowed three earned runs while walking five and striking out four to get the win.

Freshman Kristen Rodopoulos (1-3) went the first four innings and allowed three hits and three runs, two earned while walking three and fanning one to take the loss.

Richardson had two of the Bears five hits in the game one win while Montalto was 4 for 4 with the three-run homer and junior Lynsey Schill had two hits in the opener for the Valiants.

In game two, Junior Jessica Van Galen and classmate Kaite Pitcher each had two hits and drove in three runs in the 9-5 win.

Manhattanville scored in the top of the first on an RBI single by Van Glaen before adding three more in the third on an RBI single by senior Ashley Dell and a two-run single by junior Kim Angiolillo for a 4-0 lead.

The Bears scored two in the fourth on sacrifice fly by Richardson and an RBI single by freshman Chloe Harmon to cut the deficit to 4-2.

The Valiants put the game away with five runs in the top of the fourth as Van Galen had a two-run single before the big blow, a three-run homer by Pitcher for a 9-2 lead.

Pitcher (2-0) also went the distance on the mound allowing 12 hits and five runs, all earned, while walking one and striking out one.

Coast Guard scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh with Sarwinski delivering an RBI double in the fifth and an RBI single in the seventh while sophomore Devin Fellman hit a solo homer for the run in the sixth.

Fellman and junior Holli Bastinck each had three hits in game two for Coast Guard while Sarwinski and senior Jamie Kim each had two hits in the loss.

Walker (2-1) allowed 11 hits and nine runs, just four earned with four walks and four strikeouts to suffer her first loss of the season in game two.

Schill had three hits in game two for Manhattanville while Dell added a pair of hits in the win.

Coast Guard is now 9-5 overall while Manhattanville is 3-6 on the season after the split.
