Coast Guard Twice Trounces Albertus Magnus

Bears take two in baseball doubleheader

The Coast Guard Academy brought their wins up to last year's level after twice defeating Albertus Magnus College in a doubleheader on Monday. The following information was provided by the Coast Guard Academy Athletic Department:

Sophomore Nolan Gallagher delivered a game-winning RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth in the opener and classmate James Diddell pitched a complete game scattering four hits and did not allow and earned run to pickup his first collegiate win as Coast Guard swept Albertus Magnus 5-4 in eight innings and 4-1 in a non-conference doubleheader.

Coast Guard has already matched its win total from last season as the Bears improved to 12-7 after going 12-18 last season. Albertus Magnus drops to 3-9 on the season.

In the opener, Albertus took the lead with an unearned run in the top of the fourth before the Bears scored three runs in the home half of the inning. Sophomore Mike Massaro’s RBI single tied the game before Gallagher delivered a two-run triple to give Coast Guard a 3-1 lead.

The Falcons pulled to within 3-2 in the fifth when freshman Patrick Dornfield’s RBI ground out scored sophomore Matt Caputo, who led off with a double. Sophomore left fielder Eric Gerken threw out back-to-back runners at home plate to end the inning and keep the Bears in the lead.

Junior Malcolm Mendez hit a two-out, two-run homer to left in the sixth to give Albertus a 4-3 lead.

Coast Guard tied it in the bottom of the inning on a two-out RBI double by Massaro scoring junior Eddie Kalankiewicz, who singled and stole second.

The Bears won the game in the eighth as senior Graham Sherman has hit by a pitch to begin the inning, moved to second on a ground out and scored on Gallagher’s single to left.

Sophomore Riley Beecher started and went five innings for the Bears allowing seven hits and two runs, one earned. He did not walk a batter while fanning six. Sophomore Tyler Vieira (2-1) pitched the final two innings allowing a pair of hits, walking one and striking out four to pickup the win.

Freshman Christopher Rivera took the loss in relief for the Falcons. He went 1 1/3 innings allowing just the one hit. Sophomore Matt Finkenzeller started and went 6 1/3 innings allowing five hits, and four runs, all earned.

In the night cap, Diddell (1-0), who walked just one and struck out six, allowed just four singles and an unearned run in the third, which gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead.

The Bears scored four times in the third on just one hit taking advantage of a pair of walks to start the inning. Sophomore Cameron Carroll drove in the tying run on a fielder’s choice. Sophomore Ed Sella stepped to the plate, a balk was called to give the Bears the lead. Sella then delivered an RBI single. He was taking second on the throw home when an over throw got past the centerfielder and Sella circled the bases for a 4-1 lead.

Junior Cullen Burnell was the starter and loser in game two. He went four innings allowing just three hits and four runs, two earned.

Massaro and Gallagher each had two hits in the opener for Coast Guard while senior Kyle Calechman was 3 for 4 with a double and sophomore Robert Gamberdella had a pair of hits in the opener for the Falcons

In game two, Sella had a pair of hits for the Bears while senior Bobby Bengivengo had two hits and four stolen bases for Albertus Magnus.
