Coast Guard Wins Three Of Four On Diamond
Baseball, softball teams face off against Clark and Castleton State
The Coast Guard Academy continued a strong season on Saturday, winning three games in two doubleheaders. The following information was provided by the Coast Guard Academy Athletic Department:
Baseball: Coast Guard 4, Clark 2; Clark 3, Coast Guard 2
Senior Graham Sherman’s RBI single in the seventh tied the game before freshman Lukas Laplante’s RBI single gave Coast Guard a 4-3 come-from-behind win in eight innings over Clark University in the opener before senior Scott Hollingsworth’s RBI double in the fifth broke a 2-2 tie as the Cougars salvaged a split with a 3-2 win in the nightcap of a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader played at Coast Guard with Clark as the home team in both games.
In the opener, Clark, as it was on Friday’s opening game of this three-game series, was one out away before Sherman tied the game 3-3 with a single to stun the Cougars for a second straight day.
Laplante’s RBI single to left in the top of the eighth scored sophomore Eric Gerken who collided with the third baseman and was awarded home on obstruction. Gerken drew a two-out walk and moved to second on an error.
Sophomore Tyler Vieira pitched the eighth and final inning allowing just a walk to pickup his third save of the season. Senior Jesse Karr went seven solid innings allowing just four hits and two earned runs while walking one and striking out two to improve to 2-0 on the season.
The Bears (7-4, 2-1) scored twice in the top of the first on a two-run single by sophomore Mike Massaro.
Sophomore Derek Dubois (2-1) took the loss as he went the distance for Clark and allowed just five hits and three earned runs while walking three and fanning nine.
Clark (8-5, 1-2) took the lead with three runs in the second as freshman Brian Sullivan, junior Nicholas Kellogg and Hollingsworth began the inning with three straight singles, the final being an RBI single. The Cougars tied the game at 2-2 on a wild pitch and took the lead on a sacrifice fly by junior Matthew Bohl.
In game two, Clark took a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI single by sophomore James Cadagan before the Bears took the lead with two in the fourth on RBI singles by junior Eddie Kalankiewicz and Massaro.
Clark took the lead for good in the home half of the fifth as sophomore Charles Sakany tied the game with an RBI single before Hollingsworth’s RBI double to right which proved to be the game winner.
Senior Benjamin Seel worked the first five innings allowing four hits and two earned runs while walking three and fanning five to pickup the win. Senior Robert Lopez, who took the loss on Friday, picked up his first save of the season as he pitched around an error in the seventh.
Sophomore Derek Petty (0-2) allowed six hits and three earned runs in five innings with three walks and five strikeouts, but took the loss for the Bears.
Massaro had a two hits in game one for Coast Guard while Kalankiewicz added a pair of hits in game two.
Cadogan had two hits for Clark in the game two win.

Softball: Coast Guard 3, Castleton State 2; Coast Guard 10, Castleton State 0
Junior All-American Hayley Feindel, the reigning Division III National Player of the Week, allowed just four hits and no earned runs while striking out 26 as Coast Guard, ranked 12th nationally, remained unbeaten pushing its winning streak to a dozen with a sweep of Castleton State 3-2 and 10-0 in the northern and home opener for the Bears.
In the opener, Coast Guard took a 2-0 lead in the second on an RBI single by sophomore Megan Cook before adding a run on an error. The Bears added one more in the fifth on an RBI single by junior Maddie Buchert.
Castleton State scored a pair of unearned runs in the sixth as senior Sarah Flore’s two-run single made the score 3-2.
Feindel allowed just two singles in game one while walking two and striking out 12.
Sophomore Emily Sweeney (1-2) allowed just five hits and one earned run and walked four, but was the tough luck loser for the Spartans.
The Coast Guard bats exploded in game two as senior All-American Amanda Frederick was 4 for 4 and sophomore Holli Bastinck blasted a three-run homer, the first of her career, in the bottom of the sixth to enforce the eight-run rule as the Bears won 10-0.
Coast Guard broke a scoreless tie with six runs, five of them unearned, in the fourth. Freshman Devin Fellman had a two-run single in the six-run fourth.
Feindel allowed just two singles walked one and fanned 14 to register her ninth shutout of the season in game two. She has allowed just one earned run in 78 innings this season.
Fellman had two hits and three RBI’s in game two while Dupler was 2 for 2 in the second game for Coast Guard.
Castleton State drops to 1-5 on the season.
