NORWICH, Conn. – From vaccinations to routine exams, nearly 50 pets received free health care on May 18 at a wellness clinic sponsored by the Connecticut Humane Society (CHS) in partnership with the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut (CFECT) and St. Vincent de Paul Place, a community meal site and food pantry in Norwich.

The clinic, which was held at the William A. Buckingham Memorial Building in Norwich, is part of several CHS initiatives funded by CFECT’s Letz Fund for Animals and the Environment to transform animal welfare in New London County, according to Gordon Willard, CHS executive director.

During the clinic, 46 pets received full wellness checks that included rabies and distemper vaccinations, heartworm testing, and parasite prevention; 120 long-lasting flea and tick collars were distributed; and more than 700 pounds of pet food was provided to families in need.

In addition to the wellness clinic, CHS has been collaborating with New London County animal control officers, animal welfare advocates and the community at large to understand and best impact pets and people served in the region.

“This funding is designed to provide programs and services that help pet owners keep their pets happy, healthy and in their homes,” said Willard. “We are focused on increasing access to pet care and resources.”
