Connecticut College Drops Lacrosse Games To Middlebury

Panters twice outscore Camels in Saturday games

dropped a pair of lacrosse matches to Middlebury College on Saturday. The following information was provided by William Tomasian, sports information director at Connecticut College:

Men’s Lacrosse: Middlebury 12, Conn College 6

Trailing 5-2 in the third quarter, Middlebury went on a 10-1 run, scoring the final eight goals of the game for a remarkable 12-6 victory over Connecticut College at Youngman Field at Alumni Stadium. For the game, Middlebury out-shot the Camels 50-21 and 17-3 in the fourth quarter. The eighth-ranked Panthers improve to 2-0 in NESCAC play, 2-1 overall, while the Camels remain winless on the young season at 0-3, with all three losses coming from conference foes.

The fast-paced second half scoring barrage contrasted a slow start to the game as each team mustered a man-up goal in the first quarter. The scoring picked up in the second stanza as Connecticut College took a 3-1 lead on unassisted tallies by Andrew Freedman and Stephen Eicher. Middlebury sliced the lead to 3-2 before the half when Quinn Cronin spun in for his only goal of the game.

The Camels opened up their 5-2 lead early in the third period when Briggs Barton used a lefty move from 13 yards out with 14:07 left. Freedman followed 28 seconds later collecting a great cross-crease feed from J.R. Hartgers.

With less than ten minutes to play in the third quarter, the Panthers began their assault when Alex Englert put a wind-up shot past Camel goalie Rob Moccia. Ten seconds later after the Panthers won the ensuing face-off, Mike Giordano scored from in close, setting the score 5-4 in favor of the visitors with 9:13 left in the third. The Camels answered four minutes later on a goal by Chad Sawyer, giving Connecticut College a 6-4 lead.

That would be the final tally for the Camels as Middlebury started their eight-goal onslaught less than a minute later on a John Duvnjak goal, as the long-stick defender scored off a turnover. Erich Pfeffer closed out the third, muscling in from the right side, tying the game at six apiece.

It took 8:49 for Middlebury's Stew Kerr to break the 6-6 deadlock. Kerr grabbed his own off-the-post rebound and sliced a lefty bouncer past Moccia with 6:11 left to play. Leading 7-6, the Panthers' Andrew Metros scored 22 seconds later for an 8-6 lead. Giordano assisted on Middlebury's next goal at 4:09 before scoring his second of the game at 3:49. Darric White gave Middlebury an 11-6 lead as the defenseman collected a quick-stick feed from Scott Redmond in transition just 19 seconds later. Giordano fed another long-pole a minute later as Cal Williams capped the scoring with another transition goal.

Giordano paced Middlebury with two goals and two assists, while Kerr netted a pair and Redmond added two helpers. White added a goal and one assist, as Brian Foster won 8-15 face-offs, and Nate Guadio made seven saves in net for the win.

Moccia was busy in goal for the Camels, seeing 50 shots during the game, stopping 17 of them while allowing 12 goals. Freedman's two goals and Hartgers' goal and assist led Connecticut College scoring. Chuck Czerkawski grabbed a game-best 10 groundballs, most off face-off wins as the midfielder won 13-22 attempts.

Women’s Lacrosse: Middlebury 18, Conn College 10

Emma Kramer (Riverside, Conn.) scored five goals and assisted on three others to help lead the eighth ranked Middlebury College women's lacrosse team to an 18-10 victory at Connecticut College Saturday.

The Panthers improve their record to 2-0 with the win, while the Camels slip to 0-3 with the setback.

Junior Margaret Souther (Scarsdale, N.Y.) chipped in with three goals and an assist for the Panthers. Elizabeth Garry (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) and Stephanie Gill (Hingham, Mass.) both contributed with two goals and an assist for Middlebury.

Connecticut College senior Katelyn Driscoll (Peabody, Mass.) netted four scores to go along with five ground balls and four draws in the loss. Sophomore Lowell Abbott (Manchester, Mass.) chipped in with three goals for the Camels. Junior Bri Miller (Sudbury, Mass.) scored twice for the hosts.

Middlebury scored the first four goals of the second half to break the game open. Garry capped the rally, burying a free position goal with 20:53 remaining to make it a 14-5 game. Abbott and Driscoll scored two goals each in the second half but it was not enough and the Panthers continued to pull away for the 18-10 win.

The Panthers raced out to a 3-0 lead when Kramer scored for the visitors with 25:07 remaining in the first stanza. After Katie Ritter (Middlebury, Vt.) scored a free position goal with 12:26 remaining, Middlebury's lead was 8-3.

The Panthers took their largest lead of the half when Kramer netted her third goal of the contest with 11.2 seconds left. But Driscoll answered for the Camels, finding the back of the net as time expired to make it a 10-5 game at the intermission.

Middlebury College senior Lily Nguyen (San Francisco, Calif.) made four saves to earn the victory for the visitors. Alyssa Palomba (Shrewsbury, Mass.) contributed five saves in seven minutes of relief duty.

Connecticut College junior Kelsey Burke (Kingston, N.H.) made 12 saves in the setback.

Sophomore Izzy Marx (Ridgewood, N.J.) had two draw controls and three ground balls for the Camels.

Garry finished with a team-best four ground balls for the Panthers, while Stephanie Gill (Hingham, Mass.) corralled five draws for the winning side.

Middlebury will visit Skidmore College Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. game. The Camels will host Wheaton College this afternoon for a noon game in New London.
