Connecticut College Puts Squeeze On Wheaton

The Connecticut College men's lacrosse team opened strong against Wheaton College and carried it through to a win. The following information was provided by William Tomasian, sports information director for Connecticut College:

The Connecticut College men's lacrosse team opened the game with an 8-0 run and went on to defeat Wheaton College by a final of 11-5 in a non-conference contest played on the Artificial Turf at Silfen Field Tuesday.

The Camels improve 6-7 with their fourth win in the past five outings, while the visiting Lyons slip to 2-9.

Sophomore Andrew Freedman (Sudbury, Mass.) and senior Eric Doran (Pennington, N.J.) scored two goals each for the winning side. Sophomores Mike Giambanco (Massapequa, N.Y.) and John Lyons (Barrington, R.I.) both finished with a goal and two assists in the triumph.

Kevin Dachille (Garden City, N.Y.) chipped in with four ground balls. Junior net-minder John Lenehan (Hingham, Mass.) stopped three shots in the opening half to earn the win.

Rob Moccia (Malvern, Pa.) made five saves in 26:45 of relief duty and Matt Weiner (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) played the closing 3:15 in the cage for the Camels.

Wheaton College senior midfielder Bobby Barry (Duxbury, Mass.) tallied a pair of second half scores for the visitors.

Senior Ben Cederberg (Duxbury, Mass.), Chris Landers (Manchester, Mass.) and Charlie Willauer (Duxbury, Mass.) all finished with a goal and an assist for the Lyons.

Rookie net-minder Jesse O'Neil (Charlestown, Mass.) made 13 of his 20 saves in the first half for Wheaton. Jack Croasdale (Manchester, N.H.) collected five ground balls to lead the visitors.

Doran made it a 1-0 game with a goal at 12:09 of the first for the hosts. But O'Neil was able to keep the Lyons close with eight saves in the first quarter. However, the Camels were finally able to put their offense into gear in the latter stages of the first.

Giambanco and Tyler Corcoran (Simsbury, Conn.) scored unassisted goals 40 seconds apart to make it a 3-0 score. Then, with 1:14 remaining, Giambanco assisted Freedman for a goal to make it a 4-0 game.

Giambanco connected with Lyons for a goal from the center of the box with 17 seconds left and the Camels carried a 5-0 advantage after one.

The Camels scored the first three goals of the second quarter and enjoyed a comfortable 8-0 advantage after Ian Quinlan (Cohasset, Mass.) scored with 5:22 remaining.

The Lyons were able to get on the board with 1:18 remaining, when Willauer connected with Landers for a goal from just outside the crease and the Camels carried an 8-1 advantage into the break.

But Connecticut College out-scored Wheaton 2-1 in the third and continued to pull away for the 11-5 win.
