Camel women win track invitational and tennis match, qualify for national sailing competition

Connecticut College won a home women's track and field invitational on Saturday, as well as the final home women's tennis match. The women's sailing team qualified for a national competition. The following information was provided by William Tomasian, sports information director at Connecticut College:

Track and Field

The Connecticut College women's track and field team scored clutch victories in both the 4x400 meter and 4x800 meter relays to win the Silfen Invitational on a rainy Saturday in New London.

The Camels topped the 22 team field with a score of 86 points. Fitchburg State College placed second with 80 points and the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth took third place with a score of 76 points.

In the 4-by-800 meter relay, Manya Swick (Niantic, Conn.), Lianne Swanson (Franklin, Mass.), Dana Silverberg (Huntington, N.Y.) and Kelsey Taylor (East Hampton, Conn.) posted a time of 10:22.34 in a critical victory for the Camels.

Senior Haley Goodwill (Marlborough, Conn.), Michelle Wesley (Millwood, N.Y.). Ali Holland (Watertown, Mass.) and Merry Byrne (Princeton, Mass.) won the 4-by-400 meter relay in 4:20.09 for the hosts.

In the men's action, the Coast Guard bested the 21 team field with a score of 141 points. UMass Dartmouth placed second with 78 points and the Camels secured a third place finish with 72.5 points.

Sophomore Andrew Duarte (Rocky Hill, Conn.) provided the home crowd with the major highlight. Duarte cruised to victory in the 800 meter run, qualifying for the New England Division III Championship with a time of 1:56.96.

Women's Tennis

The Connecticut College women's tennis team improved to 8-11 (1-5 NESCAC) with a 6-3 victory against the Bates College Bobcats (4-13, 0-6) in a match that was played indoors in Luce Field House Saturday.

Sophomore Cassie Smith (Shelburne, Vt.) earned a 6-0, 6-4 victory at #1 singles for the Camels.

Senior Becca Heupel (Eden Prairie, Minn.) posted a 6-2, 6-2 straight set win at #2 singles in the final home match of her career. Jen Herbert (Pawcatuck, Conn.) rallied to take a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 victory at #3 singles for Connecticut College.

Heupel joined forces with classmate Caroline Barone (North Kingstown, R.I.) in an 8-4 triumph at #2 doubles.

Women's Sailing

The fourth ranked Connecticut College women's sailing team has qualified for the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA)/Sperry Top-Sider Women's National Championship. The Camels will compete for the Gerald C. Miller Trophy May 23-26 in Cascade Locks, Ore.

The Camels stamped their ticket to nationals with a second place finish in the Reed Trophy/New England Championship that was hosted by Bowdoin College this weekend. The Camels finished with 70 points, just two points behind New England Champion Boston College.

Brown University placed third with 77 points, while Yale (82) and Harvard (102) rounded out the top five in the 14 team field.

Senior skipper Maggie Shea (Wilmette, Ill.), Steph Kapinos (South Hadley, Mass.) and Liz Wilsterman (Winchester, Mass.) cruised to victory in the B division with a score of 26 points.

Sophomore skipper Atlantic Brugman (Barcelona, Spain) and Lucy Wallace (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) scored 46 points en route to their sixth place finish in the A division.

Wallace is pumped for what should be an exciting month of May for both the coed and women's teams.

"This was the most exciting weekend yet for the Camel ladies and the best is yet to come!" Wallace said.

The Camels are earning their share of recognition with numerous post-season accolades.

Maggie Shea finished in a three-way tie as the winner of the New England Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (NEISA) Sportsmanship Award.

The Camels also landed two skippers and two crews on the All-New England squad.

At the skipper position, Brugman garnered first team honors, while Shea landed on the second team. Wallace and Katrina Salk (Jamestown, R.I.) were both named as second team crews.

The 15th ranked coed sailing team hosted the Thompson Trophy Regatta in New London this weekend. The Camels placed sixth in the 18 team field with a score of 193 points.

Brown University won the regatta with a score of 149 points.

Senior skipper Mike Marshall (Jamestown, R.I.) and classmate Irasz Korezlioglu (Istanbul, Turkey) ignited the Camels with a fourth place finish in the B division, scoring 87 points in the regatta.

In the A division, junior Peter Miller (Paget, Bermuda), Kevin Lau-Hansen (Larchmont, N.Y.) and IG Schottlaender (Darien, Conn.) scored 106 points in a sixth place showing for Connecticut College.
