Camels storm past Bates in women's basketball game, lose in men's game in overtime; women's hockey team defeats Wesleyan

Connecticut College split a pair of basketball games with Bates College on Friday, while the women's hockey team defeated Wesleyan University for their fifth straight win. The following information was provided by William Tomasian, sports information director at Connecticut College:
Women's Basketball: Conn College 71, Bates 56
Jenn Shinall (Redding, Conn.) poured in a game-high 22 points and Tara Gabelman (Irvington, N.Y.) erupted with 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Connecticut College women's basketball team to a 71-56 victory against Bates College Friday night.

The Camels improve their record to 13-2 and are 4-1 in the NESCAC. The Bobcats slip to 7-9 with a 2-3 record in conference action.
Shinall was a perfect 8-for-8 from the field and had four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Gabelman knocked down 7-of-8 shots from the floor and was 5-for-6 from the charity stripe.

Sophomore Caitlin Cimino (Falmouth, Maine) chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds for the winning side.
Senior Lauren Dobish (Chamersburg, Pa.) finished with 17 points and six rebounds in the setback for Bates. Molly Brown (South Dartmouth, Mass.) added 13 points for the Bobcats while Annie Burns (Topsfield, Mass.) tallied eight points and eight boards for Bates.
The Camels put together a 15-to-6 run in the second stanza to take a 19 point lead. Gabelman put back her own missed shot with 6:35 to go and Shinall then buried a three-ball with 6:01 remaining to break the game open and put the hosts in complete control with a 56-37 advantage.
The Bobcats got the lead down to 10 at one point but could not break into the single digits. Connecticut College converted 13 of its 16 free throws in the second stanza and knocked down 85% (17-for-20) of its shots at the charity stripe in the win.
The Camels put together a 6-to-0 run in the later stages of the first half to build a 12 point advantage. Cimino hit Shinall on a backdoor cut to the hoop to make it a 21-11 game and then Jeanna Dunleavy (Chatham, N.J.) banked in a runner to put the Camels on top 23-11 with 4:32 remaining.
The Camels carried a 28-19 advantage into the break.
The Bobcats will visit Wesleyan University for a 2 p.m. game in Middletown, Conn.
Connecticut College will host Tufts University for a 2 p.m. game in New London.
Men's Basketball: Bates 84, Conn College 80
Connecticut College erased a 10 point second half deficit to force overtime but the Bates College Bobcats prevailed in the extra session, holding on for an 84-80 victory.
The Bobcats improve their record to 9-6 with a 3-2 mark in the NESCAC. The Camels are 6-11 with a 0-5 record in league play.
Sophomore guard Luke Matarozzo (Shelton, Conn.) finished with 27 points and six rebounds to lead the visitors to the win. Reid Christian (Pownal, Maine) chipped in with 15 points for the Bobcats. John Squires (Swampscott, Mass.) added 14 points and 12 boards and Ed Bogdanovich (Portland, Maine) reached double-digits with 12 points and nine rebounds.
Connecticut College sophomore Matt Vadas (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.) poured in a game-high 29 points with 11 rebounds and four assists. Junior Rob Harrigan (Milford, Conn.) was 5-for-6 from long distance and 7-for-10 from the floor en route to his 21 point, five rebound effort.
Sophomore John Bullitt (Brookline, Mass.) contributed 10 points for the Camels.
"Give bates credit," Head Men's Basketball Coach Tom Satran said. "They played really hard, particularly on the offensive glass and that was the difference in the game."
Bogdanovich converted a pair of free throws with 8:14 remaining that vaulted the visitors out to a 65-55 advantage.
The Camels responded though, putting together a furious 10-to-0 run to pull even when Vadas converted a hoop and some harm with 2:46 remaining in regulation.
Vadas would score the next two Camel field goals, putting the hosts on top 71-67 when he converted on a hoop with 1:01 to go.
But Christian responded with a triple from the right side with 56 seconds left. In the closing moments, Squires connected on one of two free throws to pull the Bobcats even with the Camels at 71 aside and the teams were headed for overtime.
In the extra session, Christian knocked down a jumper with 3:26 to go that put the visitors on top for good and Bates was able to hold on for the 84-80 victory.
Bates will visit Wesleyan University today for a 4 p.m. game in Middletown, Conn.
The Camels will host Tufts University for a 4 p.m. game in New London.
Women's Ice Hockey: Conn College 4, Wesleyan 1
The Connecticut College women's hockey team erupted with four goals in a span of 6:35 in the third period to pull away from Wesleyan University and went on to defeat the Cardinals 4-1.
The Camels extend their unbeaten streak to five games, improving to 7-5-2 with a 4-4-1 record in the NESCAC.
The Cardinals drop their 11th straight game and are 2-15 with a 1-8 mark in the NESCAC.
Sophomore Courtney Dumont (Lewiston, Maine) had a goal and two assists in the victory. Ariel DiPasquale (Whitestone, N.Y.) scored her team leading seventh goal of the season to go with an assist for the Camels.
Leah Kallen (Chicago, Ill.) and Caroline Corbett (Norwood, Mass.) chipped in with scores for the hosts.
Junior Amy Leichliter (West Chester, Pa.) stopped 14 shots en route to the win.
Wesleyan University first year forward Jordan Schildhaus (Woodbury, N.Y.) scored her seventh goal of the season in the setback.
Glenn Hartmon-Mattson (Ely, Minn.) and Caitlin Bray (Lincoln, R.I.) assisted on the score.
Junior net-minder Ashleigh Corvi (Barrington, R.I.) stopped 30 shots in the loss for the Cardinals.
The Camels took the lead for good when Kallen re-directed a shot from Andrea McRae (Stittsville, Ontario) with 14:14 remaining in regulation.
The hosts added some insurance less than a minute later when Dumont assisted DiPasquale for a score in a 2-on-1 situation.
Dumont closed out the scoring with a power play goal at 8:24 of the third.
The Camels out-shot the Cardinals 34-to-15 in the win.
The two teams will meet again this afternoon for a 3 p.m. game in New London.
