Connecticut College Wins Two In Soccer

Connecticut College picked up two wins on the soccer field on Wednesday, defeating and Eastern Connecticut State University. The following information was provided by William Tomasian, sports information director at Connecticut College:

Men's Soccer: Conn College 2, Mitchell 1

Dillon Kerr (West Roxbury, Mass.) collected a rebound in traffic and scored with 4:27 remaining in regulation to lead the Connecticut College men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory against Mitchell College in a non-conference game played on the Artificial Turf at Silfen Field.

The Camels improve to 6-3 with the win, while Mitchell falls to 3-5-1 with the setback.

Oscar Brown (Ridgefield, Conn.) chipped in with a second half goal for the Camels, who held a decisive 30-to-3 advantage in shots and a 9-to-2 edge in corner kicks.

Senior James Gleason (Old Lyme, Conn.) netted his team-leading fourth goal of the season for the Mariners. Rookie net-minder Ramizan Sinani (Waterbury, Conn.) made six saves in the setback for Mitchell.

Mitchell opened the scoring in the fourth minute of play. Junior defender Howard Johnson (New London, Conn.) layed out a perfect ball over the top of the Camel defense from midfield and Gleason chipped it in from point blank range to make it a 1-0 game.

Later on in the half, Sinani was able to deny Brown on a penalty kick in the sixth minute of action with a diving stab on a low line drive.

Sophomore Kevin Burt (New Canaan, Conn.) did not factor in the box score but his tenacity and effort was evident from the first time he stepped off the pine. Burt could have assisted on as many as three different potential scores in the first half and he did everything he could to spot the open man on the Turf.

With 5:30 remaining, Burt planted a header that sailed wide right and the Mariners carried the 1-0 advantage into the break.

In the second stanza, the Camels finally broke through. Ivan Kukharkin (Stamford, Conn.) distributed the ball ahead to Brown 15 yards in front of the goal. Brown was able to weave his way through a pair of defenders and chip in the equalizer with 20:25 to go.

The Camels continued to apply heavy pressure on the Mitchell defense. In the 86th minute, Sinani was able to get his hands on a Camel corner kick but he could not hold on and Kerr cashed in on the opportunity with the difference making goal.

Connecticut College sophomore keeper Casey Marini (Hampden, Mass.) played the opening half of action. Max Nichols (Mill Valley, Calif.) closed out the win in the second stanza.

Women's Soccer: Conn College 2, ECSU 0

First year forward Grace Bilodeau (Harvard, Mass.) scored her team-leading fifth goal in the 67th minute of action and Rebecca Parente (Orange, Conn.) converted on a penalty kick in the 82nd minute to the lead the Connecticut College Camels to a 2-0 victory at Eastern Connecticut State University Wednesday night.

Rookie net-minder Natalie Signor (Hamden, Conn.) made four saves to earn the victory. Mackenzie MacLeod (Northfield, Conn.) made six saves in the loss for the Warriors.

Connecticut College improves to 3-4-1 and is 3-1-1 over the past five games.

The Warriors are fall to 6-5-1 with the loss. The Camels out-shot the host 12-to-10 in the victory and held a 4-to-3 advantage on corner kicks.

Connecticut College will visit Tufts University Saturday for a noon-time NESCAC showdown in Medford, Mass.
