New London Fire Department Seeks New Firefighters

The jobs start at an annual salary in excess of $42,000.

The New London Fire Department is looking for new firefighter recruits, according to a job announcement on the city’s website.

Successful candidates will be sent to the Connecticut Fire Academy for training, during which time they will be paid $500 per week. Upon successful completion of the academy, a new firefighter in New London will start at an annual salary of between $42,772 and $58,181.

Applications must be mailed in (faxed or emailed applications will not be accepted), and must be post-marked by Feb. 8, 2016. Candidates must be at least 18 years old as of Feb. 8, and though recruits do not need to be residents of New London, those who are may receive extra points on their applications.

The New London department’s search for new recruits is the result of the city recently scrapping a short list of candidates because officials did not believe the application process was fair to all, reports The Day. New London hopes to improve diversity in the department but wants to achieve that in a transparent fashion.

“We’re focusing now on very fair, clean process,” Mayor Michael Passero told The Day. “We’re obviously hoping to get a good deal of interest from New London candidates. Our goal is to get an eligibility list that reflects the diversity of our city. A hiring process has to be fair to all. If our residents show interest in these jobs, we will accomplish our goal of diversity.”
