Cops: Sgt. McBride Calls Are A Scam

The caller says he's a police sergeant with a warrant for a person's arrest and says they need to mail in bail money. It's a scam, cops say

NEW LONDON, CT — Police said it's gotten a lot of calls about what seems to be a new targeted scam towards citizens of Southeastern CT.

The caller introduces themselves as 'Sgt. Kevin McBride' who is in fact a retired New London Police officer. The caller says that New London Police has a warrant out for their arrest and they need to send “surety” by card to an “FBI Dropbox” at the police department.

"When one person offered to meet “Sgt. McBride” at the station to hash this out, she was told not to come to the police department because she would be arrested without ability to bond and would be in a holding cell for a minimum of 72 hours.

Police said the number appears to be a Gales Ferry number and the voicemail message actually identifies to belonging to “Sgt. McBride.”

So far, we don’t believe anyone has been taken by this scam but NLPD wanted to ensure that the public was aware of it and cautious.
