NEW LONDON, CT — Crews are searching for a missing 15-year-old New London boy who went swimming at a Westerly beach Thursday evening, WPRI-12 in Rhode Island reported.

The boy was swimming with family and friends near the jetty at Dune's Park Beach when he went missing, Westerly Police Chief Paul J. Gingerella wrote in an email to Patch.

A large rescue mission was unable to locate the boy Thursday night. The Coast Guard will resume the search Friday morning, according to Gingerella.

The search has turned into a recovery effort as it's unlikely the boy is still alive due to rough surf. Helicopters and divers conducted the search Thursday night, which was called off at 11 p.m. due to hazardous conditions, according to WPRI. The Coast Guard continued the search periodically throughout the night.
