DCF is a long time established government institution that protects children from abuse and neglect. However, when it's used with malicious intent, then it's purpose is defeated. This blog is about that intent and the injustice that has been caused to my family.
How many people have had to deal with DCF? How many of those calls were legitimate? How many were false? My name is Becky, my children are 12 & 9 and we were just recently the center of a false claim made to DCF. Let me tell you, it was less than fun. I understand that the personnel at DCF was just doing their job. However, it was an extreme waste of tax payers' money. I am glad though, that they took the time to investigate. My family and I cooperated fully and were thankfully later ALL cleared.
Let me start by saying that the assessment process was extremely intrusive on my kids. The fact that someone would insinuate that my children were being abused makes me sick. I was not happy that they had to sit and be questioned in this manner. Along with the questions asked to my children and my family, the social worker also looked around our house. I got a huge thrill out of telling her that we were in the process of moving. So she actually got to check out two houses, my parents' and our new one.
The complaint itself was ridiculous. In fact, we all got a huge laugh out of it, including the social worker. We were asked who we thought made the complaint against us and yes, we know who made it. It was really easy to figure out. People, if you think you can hide behind that "anonymous" choice, well, you are sorely mistaken. You can't!! We were asked why we thought she called and my exact response was "she's mental and needs a straight jacket!" Yeah, I know, not the nicest thing to say, but let's all be honest about what we really think. I mean after all, HONESTY is the best policy. The person who called would be wise to remember that...just saying!
Moving forward, again, we were ALL cleared of any wrong doing. The social worker determined that it had, in fact, been a false claim. I mean, come on, they didn't even have my correct information, such as a proper phone number and last name for me. Obviously, the caller didn't do her research. The social worker was very impressed with my children. She commended us on how "well spoken and articulate" they are and seem to be well behaved. She also stated that "the kids seem to be well taken care of and no safety issues were identified". THANK YOU JESUS!!! We are doing right by my kids.
As a family unit and after consulting with our lawyer, we decided the caller needed to be held accountable for her actions. So we contacted the state using their guide lines for false reporting. Sadly, we have had no response from them. I personally made a complaint to the NLPD. I had solid proof that this was in fact a false claim and that the caller is a chronic liar. Again, sadly, the NLPD decided not to do anything with it. They basically ruled in the caller's favor, saying she had a right to do so because she feels she is a mandated report. Yeah, it sucks all around. I honestly feel the NLPD and the State of CT have let my children down and are not keeping them safe from a very sick woman. I am disappointed with the outcome of this. The state has set up laws for false reporting, but isn't going to uphold them. Clearly, this is counter-productive.
I've been asking myself who exactly qualifies as a mandated reporter. So I did some research. Mandated Reporters are people who, as a result of their profession, are more likely to be aware of abuse or neglect of children. When I think about the caller, she at one point worked for a local school system. It is possible that she could have been in a position of a mandated reporter. I asked around and according to a few different school personal, she was never an actual mandated reporter. Also, part of being a mandated reporter is you have to have CURRENT and consistent contact with the child(s) in question. I find this interesting because the caller has had no contact with my children in over 4 years. That's a long time with no contact. Which just solidifies my belief that she was in no position to make such a call. So, by using her logic that she felt she was a mandated reporter and my research, she not only misused but abused her supposed mandated reporter status. It's really sad, right? And yet, she gets away with it.
So what would prompt a person to make such a phone call? Tons of reasons such as, vindictiveness, baby momma baby daddy drama, false sense of entitlement? There are so many malicious reasons out there that I am unable to list them all. I feel the caller was extremely malicious in making the call. She had no right to do what she did. My children and family should not have had to go through that at all. But what's done is done, right? Um, no! I don't think so. Karma is a "you know what", and one day the caller will get hers. I believe you get back what you put into the universe. All the hate and discontent she feels like spreading will come back to her ten fold.
So I have decided to put my experience out there publicly. I am really nervous about opening up about a very private and embarrassing experience. However, I feel people have the right to know that you are not alone in having false allegations made against you. If you can prove your case, then I encourage you go to your local PD and make a statement. The Officer that took mine said this is the first one he has ever dealt with. Maybe if more people stepped forward, the State and PD would actually enforce the laws. I also encourage everyone reading this to really think before they make a malicious call to DCF. Make sure you are acting in good faith and with solid proof of wrong doing when you do make an "anonymous" call. I wish I knew what my children and I had done to her, that she would abuse her supposed outdated mandated reporter status. Seriously, over 4 years without contact? Come off of it already. All I ask at this point is to be left alone. Leave my family out of whatever hate you feel like spreading.
