Despite Magnet Schools, New London Grapples with Ed Funding
The district has gone to an all-magnet schools format.

Despite moving to an all-magnet school format, which has lured hundreds of students from nearby communities, New London is grappling with the potential loss of state education funding, according to district officials.
This school year alone, Groton will spend nearly $2.7 million sending students to other districts, most notably New London, reports The Day.
But at the same time, New London is staring down the potential loss of millions of dollars in state aid, which will make budgets tight and could hurt school construction plans.

“It would cut us off at the knees,” New London Schools Superintendent Manuel J. Rivera told The Day about a cap on state education funding to the district. “It’s going to have to be addressed legislatively or administratively. A cap would destroy our efforts to become a magnet district.”
