Eagles Soar Past Mariners

Post University defeats Mitchell College in tennis

The Mitchell College fell a game short in a tennis match against Post University on Wednesday. The following information was provided by David Longolucco, sports information director at Mitchell College:

The Mitchell College men’s tennis team dropped a 5-4 final to visiting Post University on Wednesday afternoon at the Mitchell tennis courts.

The Eagles (2-7 overall) started the match by taking two of the three doubles points. Markeese Mcleod (Stamford, Conn.) and Alamin Ripon (Bristol, Conn.) won at the No. 2 spot by a score of 8-6 while the team of Mark Risbridger (Southampton, England) and Michael MacDonald (Stamford, Conn.) won 8-5 at No. 3. Sophomore Rocco Devona (Waterford, Conn.) and junior Tyler Engleberg (Niantic, Conn.) picked up the lone doubles point for the Mariners with an 8-3 victory at the top position.

Post sealed the victory by winning three of the six singles matches. Caio Rodriguez (Suzano, Sao Paulo, Brazil) handed Devona his first collegiate loss at the No. 1 spot in straight sets (6-3, 6-3). Ripon was also victorious at No. 3 against senior Adam Samuels (New Rochelle, N.Y.).

Mitchell (2-2 overall) got a strong performance from Engleberg at No. 2 singles, as he remained unbeaten on the season by blanking Mcleod (6-0, 6-0). Juniors Andrew Small (Westerly, R.I.) and Alex Fusco (Saugus, Mass.) each earned victories at the No. 4 and 5 spots, respectively. Fusco triumphed over MacDonald (6-2, 6-1) while Small took down Risbridger in a super tiebreaker (6-3, 6-7, 1-0 (10-7)).

Mitchell will next host Johnson & Wales University on Thursday, April 7 at 3:30 p.m. Post returns to action at Caldwell College on Saturday, April 9 at 1 p.m.
