Emergency Church Repairs Complete, Roads Reopen In New London

Interior work at the church remains ongoing but is expected to only have a minimal impact on traffic.

NEW LONDON, CT — Emergency exterior stabilization repairs to the steeple of the 2nd Congregational Church at Broad/Hempstead and Federal streets is now complete, according to a post from the New London Police Department.

Construction fencing around the site was removed Tuesday.

Associated roads are reopened, and traffic is back to normal patterns, police said. Interior work at the church remains ongoing but is expected to only have a minimal impact on traffic.

"We sincerely thank residents, businesses, and commuters for their cooperation with these traffic challenges over the past few months," police wrote.

The emergency repairs started in late November. City officials cited cracks and other issues when the building was condemned, according to WTNH News-8.
