JWU Knocks Mitchell Off In Men's Soccer

Mariners fall 1-0

Johnson & Wales University held on to a lead over Mitchell College on Saturday, defeating the Mariners 1-0 in a men's soccer game. The following information was provided by Daniel Booth, sports information director at Johnson & Wales:

The two teams battled through a scoreless first half with JWU holding a 7-6 advantage in shots for the stanza.

After a back and forth 20 minutes to open the second half, JWU broke the scoreless tie in the 67th minute when senior Adam Shafer (Corning, N.Y.) headed in a cross from freshman Chris Zappel (Jamaica, N.Y.) for the 1-0 lead.  The Wildcats would then hold on for the one goal victory.

Freshman Ryan Dzierawski (Oakland, Mich.) posted two saves in the shutout victory for Johnson & Wales while senior Kevin Woodford (Niantic, Conn.) had five stops in the loss for Mitchell.

With the win Johnson & Wales is now 1-5 while Mitchell falls to 2-2-1 for the year. The Wildcats will return to action on Wednesday, September 21st when they travel to Regis for a non-conference contest at 6:00 p.m.
