Large Fire Hits Downtown New London Building

The second alarm fire broke out Wednesday morning.

NEW LONDON, CT — A second alarm fire has been reported at 167 Bank St. in New London, according to a tweet from firefighters. The Waterford Fire Department is assisting in fighting the blaze.

WTNH News-8 reported that flames can be seen coming from the building. Police are also at the scene.

The building was being renovated to be turned into apartments, according to NBC CT. Five workers inside the building escaped safely when the fire broke out.

A neighboring restaurant and apartment building were evacuated as a precaution, and Bank Street was expected to be closed for several hours, according to NBC CT.
