Late Goal Puts Conn College Past Mount Holyoke

A goal in the final minutes of a Tuesday game was enough to propel Connecticut College past Mount Holyoke College. The following information was provided by William Tomasian, sports information direction at Connecticut College:

Senior forward Brigi Palatino (Ludlow, Mass.) scored in the 79th minute of action to lead the Connecticut College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory against Mount Holyoke College in a non-conference game played on Tempel Green Tuesday.

The Camels improve to 4-5-1 with the win, while the Lyons fall to 3-7 with the setback. Connecticut College extends its winning streak to 19 games in this longstanding New England rivalry. Rookie net-minder Natalie Signor (Hamden, Conn.) stopped two shots in 62:53 to earn the victory in relief. Amy Lowitt (Baltimore, Md.) made three stops in 27:07 of action as the starter.

Mount Holyoke College rookie net-minder Mackenzie Randall (Harwington, Conn.) stopped two Camels shots in the opening half. Junior Emily Shank (Northfield, Minn.) had five saves in the second stanza.

Connecticut College out-shot the Lyons 22-to-8 and was awarded all five of the corner kicks in the contest.

The Camels applied heavy pressured in the second half. With 21:30 remaining, Becca Parente (Orange, Conn.) fired a low shot from 15 yards out but Shank was able to hit the deck to make the diving stab. Later on with 17:18 left in regulation, Celia Alvarez (Saugus, Mass.) was able to beat her defender on the left side of the box and let one rip from about 16 yards out but the shot sailed over the crossbar and out of play.

However, in the 79th minute the Camels finally broke through. Palatino was able to dribble in from the right side and chip one in from point blank range. The Camels were able to hold on for the 1-0 win.

Mount Holyoke junior forward Kiana Lussier (South Hadley, Mass.) had the first scoring chance in the game. Lussier was able to break free right near the 18 yard line but Lowitt came all the way out to make the stop.

Connecticut College junior Ali McKeigue (Arlington, Mass.) launched a 25 yard blast in the 16th minute of action but her shot caromed off the right post.

Both teams will return to conference play Saturday. The Lions will host MIT for a 1:00 p.m. game in South Hadley, Mass. The Camels will take on Bates College in an 11:00 a.m. NESCAC game.
