Local Artists Add Distinctive New London Flair To Tree Lighting

NEW LONDON, CT — The City of New London and the City Center District will illuminate the New London Christmas Tree on Friday, Nov. 24, at 5 p.m., officially marking the start of the holiday season.

"What makes this year's tree truly special is its refreshed appearance, courtesy of the creative touch of over 33 local artists who have meticulously painted and transformed aging ornaments into vibrant works of art," the city said in a statement.

Barbara Neff, owner of Neff Productions, and local artist Kat Murphy joined forces to add local flair into the Christmas tree decor.

Neff said that Councilor Efrain Dominquez noted the previous year: "The tree looks the same every year. How can we make it look different?"

Neff took charge of coordinating the installation of the Christmas tree and pole decorations. Many of the ornaments were old and faded.

Neff brought in Murphy, who "skillfully rewired and applied a fresh base coat to the old ornaments," according to the statement.

The two then reached out to local artists. More than 30 artists hand-painted 50 ornaments "adding a vibrant and personalized touch to this year's Christmas Tree."

Neff and Murphy also initiated a sponsorship program, allowing businesses to support local artists through financial sponsorship. Several artists secured sponsorships, receiving stipends for their creative contributions to the ornament decorations.
