Local Health Officials Release Coronavirus Statement
The Ledge Light Health District is informing residents about the spread of the virus.
NEW LONDON, CT — The Ledge Light Health District has released a statement regarding the spread of the COVID 19 virus (Coronavirus). According to LLHD:
- Community transmission of COVID 19 has occurred in multiple countries, including the United States. Additional community transmitted cases are expected.
- Six fatalities in the United States have been confirmed.
- Community mitigation will be the public health focus.
- The severity of the disease and extent of the outbreak will dictate which mitigation efforts will be put in place.
- The goal of these mitigation efforts will include:
- Reducing transmission of disease
- Keeping healthcare systems functioning
- Establishing continuity plans for businesses, schools, etc.
- No vaccine will be available for a year or more. No antiviral medication has been approved yet.
- People may be contagious before symptoms develop.
- Currently there are tracking requirements in place for travelers from China only. These mechanism may be extended to other countries in the future. Local health districts, in cooperation with DPH, are responsible for these tracking activities.
- Educational institutions should have a plan in place for students who plan international travel over spring break.
- All residents reconsider plans for international travel, due to uncertainty of travel restrictions in the future.
