Man Hospitalized After Eating Contaminated Fish At Area Restaurant

A man was sent to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital after eating contaminated fish at an area restaurant.

NEW LONDON, CT - A man was sent to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital after eating contaminated fish at an unidentified area restaurant, the New London Day reported. Officials said the unidentified man consumed the contaminated red snapper at the end of April.

The man was soon after diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, which is characterized by the swelling and breakdown of skeletal muscle and risk of kidney failure, the New London Day reported. He was hospitalized for almost three weeks, and the cause of illness was identified as a rare disease know as Haff disease. (To sign up for New London breaking news alerts and more, click here.)

Ledge Light officials said the contamination is caused by a toxin in the fish and not a result of negligence on the part of the restaurant, the New London Day reported. The agency has since visited the restaurant and took possession of six other frozen red snapper that may have also been contaminated.
