The Mitchell College women’s tennis team started off its 2011 season with a 7-2 loss to Saint Joseph College on Tuesday. The following information was provided by David Longolucco, sports information director at Mitchell College:
Sophomore Mackenzie Flanagan (San Anselmo, Calif./San Domenico) recorded the lone singles victory for the Mariners (0-1 overall) while freshmen Marisa Haggett (Marlboro, Conn./Great Path Academy) and Jennifer Schmidt (Clarksburg, Mass./Drury) earned a win in doubles action. Saint Joseph (1-2 overall) won the remaining singles matches in straight sets to secure its first team victory of the season.
Haggett and Schmidt wasted little time picking up their first doubles win of their collegiate careers. The duo bested Angela Zaffetti and Julie Ann Robinson by a final score of 8-1 to secure a point for the Mariners in doubles play.
Trailing 2-1 heading into singles, Mitchell got a point back in singles play when Flanagan’s opponent retired with an injury. Flanagan had lost the first set but was up 3-0 in the second when the decision was made. Haggett also gave her opponent a tough run at No. 5 singles but lost 6-2, 6-4.
Mitchell will next begin NECC play at Bay Path College on Saturday, September 17 at 1 p.m.
