McCourt Benefit Softball Game Set For Sept. 23

Fire and police departments hold yearly contest to benefit fund for New London 9/11 victims

The 10th annual softball game held in memory of two 9/11 victims from New London will take place later this month.

The Juliana Valentine McCourt Memorial Softball Game will take place at 11 a.m. on Sept. 23 at Veterans Field in Waterford. The and have held the game each year since 2002 in memory of McCourt and her mother, Ruth McCourt. Both were passengers on the second plane to hit the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

Proceeds from the game will benefit the , whose mission is “to educate young people everywhere in the virtues of generosity, kindness, and the acceptance of differences among cultures, races, and religions.” The fund is managed by the .

Prior to the game, the departments will honor former NLPD deputy chief Marshall Segar for his work with the McCourt game and New London Police Union.

The police department won last year's game 10-9 and won five prior games as well. The fire department won two games. The 2008 contest was rained out.
