Mitchell College Aces Becker On Court

Mariners win men's tennis match 7-2

The Mitchell College men’s tennis team defeated Becker College on Monday afternoon on Mitchell's home court. The following information was provided by David Longolucco, sports information director at Mitchell College:

The Mariners (8-2 overall, 5-1 NECC) posted their sixth straight win and swept the regular season series against the Hawks (4-7 overall, 3-4 NECC). Junior Kyle Carmona (Norwich, Conn./Norwich Free Academy), sophomore Rocco Devona (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) and junior Tyler Engleberg (Niantic, Conn./East Lyme) each won at both singles and doubles for Mitchell. Josh Rasmussen (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) paced Becker on the day by winning both of its points.

Mitchell took the first two doubles points in convincing fashion, with Carmona and Devona posting an 8-0 victory at the top spot and Engleberg and junior Alex Fusco (Saugus, Mass.) teaming for an 8-2 win at the No. 2 position. The real battle came at No. 3 doubles where Rasmussen and partner Matt Graham (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Los Osos) outlasted Adam Samuels (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and Andrew Small (Westerly, R.I.) for an 8-6 win.

The Mariners pulled away with solid singles play, winning at the top five spots to take the match. Carmona dispatched Jake Gilbert (Huntington Beach, Calif./Harvest Christian Acad.) by scores of 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 while Devona topped Tim Howard (Paxton, Mass./Wachusett Regional) at No. 2 by scores of 6-3, 6-1.

Becker’s lone win in singles came at the No. 6 position where Rasmussen defeated Fusco by scores of 6-2, 6-2.

Mitchell will next host Wheelock College on Tuesday, April 26 at 3:30 p.m. Becker returns to action at Clark University on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
