Mitchell and Albertus Magnus face off in soccer, volleyball

The Mariners couldn't best the Falcons on the soccer field on Wednesday, but managed to defeat Albertus Magnus College in volleyball. The following information was provided by Krisen DeCarli, assistant athletic director of Albertus Magnus College, and David Longolucco, sports information director at Mitchell College:

Men's Soccer: Albertus Magnus 2, Mitchell 0

The Albertus Magnus men’s soccer team scored two second-half goals to defeat Mitchell College 2-0 in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.

Albertus (5-2) controlled possession in the first half and outshot the Mariners (2-3-1) by a 19-3 clip but could not find the back of the net until the second half of play.

Richard Mitchell (Naugatuck, Conn.) scored his first career goal in the 71st minute to give the Falcons’ a 1-0 advantage. The freshman connected on a loose ball in front of the net to score the eventual game winner.

In the 89th minute, freshman Lindsley Barrett (Shelton, Conn.) extended the Albertus lead to 2-0 as he scored his fourth goal of the season. Both scores for the Falcons were unassisted.

Donato Piroscafo (Naugatuck, Conn.) made three saves in net for the Falcons in his shutout victory after being named GNAC Goalkeeper of the Week for his efforts during last week’s competition. On the year, the sophomore has made 40 saves in 619 minutes of work.

Jamal Howard (West Haven, Conn.), who also won GNAC honors, being named Player of the Week, led the Falcons with nine shots, including three on goal. Both Barrett and Jesse Plona (Trumbull, Conn.) added four shots a piece.

Mitchell’s Kevin Woodford made 11 saves in net for the Mariners as he allowed both Falcon goals.

Albertus outshot Mitchell 28-9 on the afternoon to mark the most shots in a contest this season for the Falcons. The win is the fourth straight for the Falcons as well.

Next up for Albertus is a GNAC match-up against Johnson and Wales (R.I.) on Saturday, Sept. 24. The contest is scheduled to begin at 3:15 p.m. at Celentano Field following the Albertus Magnus women’s soccer match against JWU at 1:00 p.m.

Volleyball

For the second time in five days, the Mitchell College women’s volleyball team needed five sets to post a 3-2 victory over Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday night at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

Unlike the first meeting, Mitchell (4-2 overall) found itself trailing 2-1 after the third set but rallied back to win the final two. The Mariners won by set scores of 24-26, 25-22, 20-25, 25-23 and 15-11.

Freshmen Emily Stracuzzi (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) and Alivia Royal (New London, Conn./New London) led Mitchell with 15 and 11 kills, respectively, while classmate Nicole Terni (Ledyard, Conn./Montville) totaled 35 assists and 22 digs. Junior Arianna Thomas (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West) also pitched in with 20 digs.

Albertus Magnus (0-8 overall) was led by Melissa Manning (Milford, Conn./Foran), who finished with a match-high 17 kills. Elizabeth Williams (West Haven, Conn./Hyde) added 14 kills while Maritza Rosemond (New Haven, Conn./Career) dished out 29 assists. Nicole Acerra (East Haven, Conn./East Haven) led all players with 28 digs.

Mitchell will next play at Curry College on Tuesday, September 27 at 6 p.m. Albertus Magnus returns to action with a home doubleheader on Saturday, September 24 against Simmons College at 11 a.m. and Anna Maria College at 3 p.m.
