Mariners put more wins on the board in tennis, volleyball

Mitchell picked up two wins on the volleyball and tennis courts on Tuesday evening, defeating Curry College and Albertus Magnus College. The following information was provided by David Longolucco, sports information director at Mitchell College, and Ken Golner, sports information director at Curry College.

Women's Tennis: Mitchell 6, Albertus Magnus 3

The Mitchell College women’s tennis team earned its first win of the season on Tuesday afternoon, posting a 6-3 victory over Albertus Magnus College at the Mitchell College Tennis Courts.

The Mariners (1-3 overall) started out the match by winning two of three doubles points and then sealed the victory with four points in singles action. Senior Amanda Resnick (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood), junior Julie Embley (Lawrenceville, N.J./Allentown) and sophomore Mackenzie Flanagan (San Anselmo, Calif./San Domenico) each picked up wins in both singles and doubles.

Resnick and Flanagan teamed up to produce an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles while Embley and playing partner Jaimee Topkin (New London, Conn./New London) picked up an 8-1 victory at the No. 2 spot. The duo of Gina D'Agostino and Haley Manson held off Jennifer Schmidt (Clarksburg, Mass./Drury) and Amanda Zullo (West Haven, Conn./St. Joseph) by an 8-4 final to salvage a point for the Falcons (0-4 overall).

Mitchell claimed victories at the top three singles positions, all in straight sets. Flanagan was a winner by 6-0, 6-0 finals over Sandybell Anorga at the top spot, improving to 3-1 overall in singles play on the season. Both Resnick and Embley posted their first singles victories of the year, the former by 6-0, 6-1 finals over Na’Tasha Mesidor and the latter by finals of 6-2, 7-5 over Tykima Thompson.

Schmidt, a freshman, also earned her first career victory with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Rebecca Weinberger at the No. 5 position. The Falcons took points at No. 4 and 6 singles—both in 10-point tiebreakers in lieu of a third set—behind the play of Chantal Simmons and Malika Grant, respectively.

Mitchell will next host Becker College on Wednesday, September 28 at 4 p.m. Albertus Magnus returns to action at Saint Joseph College on October 1 at noon.

Volleyball: Mitchell 3, Curry 1

The Curry College Women's Volleyball team played four closely-contested sets, but succumbed to visiting Mitchell College, 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 27-25, 25-20), on Tuesday evening in Milton. The Mariners improved to 5-2, while the Colonels fell to 2-9.

Every set was a see-saw affair, with no team opening a lead larger than eight points. After Mitchell squeaked out the opening set by two, Curry evened the match with a three-point victory in set #2. The Mariners captured another two-point win in the third set then put the match away in the fourth by five points – the largest margin of the night.

Senior Bianca Young (Bridgeport, Conn.) led Mitchell with a team-high six kills. Freshman Nicole Terni (Ledyard, Conn.) had a match-high 27 digs. Senior Marie Connelly (Bronx, N.Y.) dished out a match-high 20 assists and added three kills.

As a team, the Colonels collected a season high 31 kills. Curry was led by freshman Courtney DiBiaso (Coventry, R.I.) with a match-high 13 kills. She also contributed three service aces and 12 digs. Sophomore Tyla Miller (Marshfield, Mass.) recorded a team high 18 digs. Freshman Michelle Theroux (Avon, Conn.) dished out a team best 13 assists to go along with nine digs.
