
The Mitchell College women's soccer team walloped Wheelock College in a Saturday afternoon game, scoring nine goals before the clock ran out. The men's team had similar success, defeating the Wildcats 6-1. The following information was provided by Alan Wickström, director of sports information at Wheelock College:

Freshman forward Maariyah Lombardo (Middletown, CT) netted four goals to lead the Mitchell College women’s soccer team over host Wheelock College, 9-1, this afternoon in a New England Collegiate Conference match at Winsor Field in Boston. The Mariners improve to 6-4-2 overall and 4-1-2 in league play, while the Wildcats fall to 1-11 and 1-6.
Lombardo netted Mitchell’s second and third goals of the day, assisted on each by senior midfielder Angie Smith (Meriden, CT) for a 3-1 lead at 28:34 of the first half. Lombardo’s third goal came with 11:34 left in the match to give the visitors a 7-1 advantage and her final tally and team-leading 10th of the season came with just 2:41 left in the match for a 9-1 Mariner’s lead.

Wheelock got on the board first when senior forward Adriana Perry (Holbrook, MA) celebrated the team’s senior day with her first goal of the season on a shot she lofted from right sideline just over the Mitchell keeper at 5:12 of the first half for a 1-0 edge.
Smith countered just 49 seconds later for the Mariners at 6:01 to knot the score at 1-1. Smith tallied two more goals on the afternoon with her second giving Mitchell a 4-1 margin with 4:30 left in the first half and later increased her team’s lead by one with the first goal of the second half and fourth of the year coming at 54:47. Smith also assisted on the Mariners’ next tally when she fed senior midfielder Shannen Pelletier (Coventry, RI) at 62:10 for a 6-1 cushion. The helper gave her nine points on the afternoon with three goals and three assists.
Junior forward Amanda Hernandez (Islip Terrace, NY) picked up Mitchell’s other goal at 83:32 for an 8-1 lead with her first marker of the campaign.
The Mariners kept the pressure on the Wildcats all afternoon with a 43-12 shot advantage.
Sophomore keeper Kaylee Woodford (Niantic, CT) earned the victory with eight saves for Mitchell, while senior goalie Alexandra Chiesa (Medford, MA) stopped 13 of 19 shots in 73:25 of action for Wheelock to increase her career school-record save total to 492. Junior goalie Sarah McCaffrey (East Taunton, MA) turned away two of five shots in the final 16:35 in net for the home team.
The Wildcats will be in action again on Wednesday, October 26 when they travel to Chicopee, MA to take on Elms College in NECC play at 7:00 p.m., while the Mariners host Bay Path College on October 25 at 3:30 p.m.
Men's Soccer: Mitchell 6, Wheelock 1
Senior forward James Gleason (Old Lyme, CT) and freshman forward Frank Williams (Westerly, RI) each netted a pair of goals to lead the Mitchell College men’s soccer team over host Wheelock College, 6-1, this afternoon in a New England Collegiate Conference contest at Winsor Field in Boston. The Mariners improve to 4-9-1 overall and 2-4 in league play, while the Wildcats fall to 0-11 and 0-5.
Gleason and Williams traded the first two goals of the afternoon for Mitchell with Gleason scoring at 31:02 of the first half after settling the ball in the box and firing a quick, hard shot into the left corner. Williams scored when senior midfielder Dustin Huguenin (Gales Ferry, CT) lifted a cross into the box and Williams unleashed a hard shot into the right corner at 35:13. Wheelock senior midfielder Francisco Perez (Boston, MA/John D. O’Bryant HS) broke up the Mariners scoring flurry with his first collegiate goal when freshman midfielder Miles Carey-Snow (Brunswick, ME) found him with a cross from the left side at 36:58 to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Gleason and Williams picked up where they left off in the first half with the first two markers of the second half to give Mitchell a 4-1 advantage. Gleason’s team-leading seventh goal of the year came when freshman defender Jason Kirby (Cresskill, NJ) sent a cross to his foot from the top left corner of the box at 49:05 and Williams followed just over four minutes later when he collected the rebound of a shot off the post by Gleason and found the back of the net for his fifth tally of the season.
The Mariners increased their margin at the 59-minute mark when Kirby sent a cross to the top of the box where junior midfielder Michael Berthiaume (Brooklyn, CT) settled the ball and slipped a shot just inside the right post for his first goal of the campaign and a 5-1 lead. A jubilant Jerome Pyfrom (Nassau, Bahamas) tallied his first goal of the season and the final goal of the afternoon when freshman forward David Pegnataro (Old Lyme, CT) found him streaking down the left side of the field for a hard shot into the right corner at 78:15 for a 6-1 cushion.
Mitchell owned a comfortable 39-7 shot advantage for the afternoon.
Senior keeper Kevin Woodford (Niantic, CT) joined his younger sister in earning victories for the Mariners’ soccer teams with two saves on the three shots that he faced in 72:21 of action, before freshman goalie Chad Harshbarger (New Canaan, CT) played the final 17:39 of action without being tested. Senior Bobby Venning (Greenfield, NH) stopped nine of 14 shots in net for the Wildcats in the first 71:08 of play, before yielding to junior Oginga Walters (Johnston, RI), who turned away three of four shots in the final 18:52.
Wheelock will be in action again on Monday, October 24 when it travels to New Haven, CT to take on Albertus Magnus College at 3:30 p.m., while Mitchell hosts Lesley University on October 26 at 3:30 p.m.
