Mystic Seaport Museum Names New President, CEO

A 28-year veteran of the institution who previously served as interim president and vice president of Advancement will take the helm.

MYSTIC, CT – Christopher Freeman has been appointed as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Mystic Seaport Museum, effective immediately. The museum made the announcement Tuesday. Freeman had served as interim president and CEO for the past seven months.

His appointment follows a review by the Board of Trustees. Mystic Seaport Museum Board Chair Richard Clary stated that Freeman has shown consistent leadership while preparing for the future. Clary added that Freeman brings continuity, institutional knowledge, and a commitment to the Museum's mission. The board trusts his ability to strengthen the museum and advance its strategic priorities as it approaches its centennial.

Freeman has been part of the Mystic Seaport Museum staff for 28 years. Before his interim role, he served as vice president of Advancement. His nearly three-decade tenure has focused on supporting the museum's mission to inspire an enduring connection to the American maritime experience and serving the Mystic community.

Freeman expressed his honor regarding the Board of Trustees' confidence and his gratitude for the chance to continue serving the institution. He noted the museum's exceptional staff, powerful mission, and essential local and national role. Freeman added that the museum deserves national support at the highest level and looks forward to continuing the work, supporting staff and community, strengthening the foundation, and advancing strategic priorities.

During his time as interim president and CEO, the museum maintained seasonal programming and moved forward with key strategic initiatives. It also worked to strengthen its operational and financial standing. Freeman's appointment highlights the Board of Trustees' focus on stability, continuity, and leadership as the organization moves toward its centennial anniversary in 2030.
