Downtown bars The Bulkeley House and The Exchange were closed after they allegedly violated the state Department of Labor’s Wage and Workplace Standards.
The bars allegedly paid workers in cash and had no payroll records, according to the New London Day. It isn’t illegal to pay workers in cash, but businesses must keep payroll records.
The bars can reopen when they show compliance.
