New London to Hold Off on Buying Riot Gear for Police

The Mayor stated that he wanted a chance to discuss the issue with administration first.

Finizio wrote in an email to Acting Police Chief Peter Reichard that members of the public and the police union were concerned that the gear would signal a ‘military like escalation’ of law enforcement in response to local protests highlighting the issue of police brutality, the paper reports.

Finizio said at a City Council meeting Tuesday that he wanted a chance to discuss the issue with the union and the City Council.

According to the paper, Reichard had asked the City Council last week to purchase the gear, which would cost $28,000.
