New London Mental Health Support Forum Coming Up

City and school leaders on Tuesday will host a public forum to discuss existing mental health support systems.

NEW LONDON – City and school leaders on Tuesday will host a public forum to discuss existing mental health support systems in the wake of the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

The event, “A Community Conversation to Learn About the Various Mental Health Supports Available” is scheduled for 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Jennings School library.

Each of the leaders will discuss resources available through their respective departments and organizations. Information will be available for attendees to take.

Blank index cards will be provided for attendees to submit questions regarding mental health supports, how they can help someone in crisis, and other topics they wish to discuss with leaders in future forums.

Staff from the schools’ Mental Health Department will be joined by Superintendent Cynthia Ritchie and School Board President Elaine Maynard-Adams to discuss school-based resources.

Police officers and Chief Brian Wright will share their resources to address mental health issues, and New London Human Services Director Jeanne Milstein will explain programs available through the City.

State Rep. Anthony Nolan will discuss legislative initiatives regarding mental health programs statewide.

New London NAACP President Jean Jordan and representative of other community organizations will join the conversation to help raise awareness of their services.

Rabbi Marc Ekstrand and Rev. Michael Cagle will close the event with messages of hope and support through the city’s various religious organizations.
