New London Opens Warming Shelters

The city is opening warming shelters as bitterly cold temperatures arrive.

NEW LONDON, CT — With bitterly cold temps starting today and for the next few days, the Governor Ned Lamont is activating the state's Severe Cold Weather protocol beginning at 12 PM today January 10, 2022 through 12:00 PM Wednesday January 12, 2022. Anyone in need of shelter can call 2-1-1 to find a list of the closest locations or @211CT

The City of New London has developed a plan with our nonprofit shelter partners, to assist those in need. The City of New London will be opening a warming center on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for those in need during normal business hours (8am till 6pm) at the New London Public Library at 63 Huntington Street. After business hours, people with homeless needs will be directed to the Homeless Hospitality Center, 325 Huntington Street for (Adults) or the Covenant Shelter, 42 Jay Street for (Women and Children). Should any citizen require additional assistance during this weather event they are encouraged to call 911 in an emergency or (860) 447-5269 (Police/Fire/EMS Dispatch) for routine requests for weather assistance during this forecasted intense cold weather period.

The New London Police and Fire Departments will also be alert, vigilant and actively looking for people at risk and they will assist those in need to areas of shelter. This plan will remain in effect during this dangerous cold weather event.
