New London Tables Decision On Trash Program: Report

The City Council postponed a vote on the possible implementation of a pay-as-you-throw trash program.

NEW LONDON, CT — The City Council postponed a vote on the possible implementation of a pay-as-you-throw trash program during a meeting Monday, according to media reports.

According to the New London Day, the council decided to table a decision on the program's implementation until July 16 after a number of residents packed the meeting to voice their opposition.

Town officials said the program's aim would be to increase recycling and possibly curb future tax increases associated with municipal waste disposal, according to the Day.

According to NBC Connecticut, many residents voiced opposition to the plan as it would require them to pay for every garbage bag they throw out that is picked up by city workers. Mayor Michael Passero said the plan could save the city upwards of $700,000 a year.
