New London's 43rd Annual Sailfest Canceled
The city has announced that the popular summertime event will be canceled.

NEW LONDON, CT —The 43rd Anniversay Sailfest and fireworks show will be canceled, according to a statement from the city. The city made the decision in conjunction with the Downtown New London Association, the City of Groton, and Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, which has put on the annual fireworks display during the event since 1993.
"Sailfest is one of the most beloved annual summer traditions in the state. We’re all very disappointed, but the City of New London, Downtown New London Association, City of Groton and Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation collectively understands the need to be extra cautious for the sake of our communities and visitors," Mayor Michael Passero said in a statement. "Sailfest is an event we look forward to each year. But with health and safety concerns remaining paramount, there is no way to mitigate the risks of crowds gathering for Sailfest at City Pier, along Waterfront Park and throughout downtown New London."
Sailfest was scheduled to be held July 10 to 12 and would have included over 200 vendors, amusement rides, free entertainment, boats and the Mashantucket Pequot Fireworks, sponsored by Foxwoods Resort Casino.

The Saturday night fireworks extravaganza has been a long-standing tradition, with more than two generations of outdoor BBQ and backyard parties.
"Given the current state of the coronavirus pandemic and the concern for large crowds, canceling this year’s Sailfest and our annual fireworks is an unfortunate but necessary move we must all make in order to protect Connecticut residents," Rodney Butler, chairman of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, said in a statement. “Although disappointed we’re unable to enjoy the wonders of this iconic annual tradition, our priority is ensuring the health and safety of our local communities. We look forward to continuing our support for one of the most spectacular events in all of New England.”

Organizers said that although they're disappointed about the cancellation, they're looking forward to celebrating Sailfest next year on July 9 to 11.
For this year, they are planning a Virtual 5K Road Race. Information about the virtual running event can be found on the Sailfest website, www.sailfest.org. The association also plans to post video online of fireworks from the past on July 11, so people can enjoy from their homes.
