Obituary: George “Ned” Tobin III

Today's Obituary

 

New London: On Monday, August 20, 2012 George “Ned” Tobin III, husband, father, and brother, passed away peacefully at the age of 71. Ned will be forever remembered by his wife and best friend Patricia Liguori Tobin, and their sons, Peter and his wife Kelly of Evansville, Indiana, and Christopher and his wife Andrea of Scituate, Massachusetts, and by his sister Connie and her husband Gary Dowrey of Englewood, Florida and brother David and his wife Holly of Charlestown, Rhode Island.  Ned is predeceased by first wife Carole Bailey, his parents George E. Tobin Jr. and Lois of Westerly, and will also be fondly remembered by his six grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, extended family, and dear friends.

A native of Westerly for 55 years, Ned earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education and a Masters degree in Counseling from Rhode Island College.  He was a teacher and guidance counselor in Connecticut Public Schools in Stonington and Ledyard for over 30 years, where many students remember him fondly.

Ned served throughout his life as a volunteer, including 20 years of service in the Westerly volunteer Alert Hook and Ladder Company, The Town of Westerly Conservation Commission, and the Rhode Island Chapter of Ducks Unlimited.  An avid golfer, Ned was a member of the Winnapaug Country Club for over 25 years and was an active member at Riverwood Country Club in Port Charlotte, Florida.

A Mass in Ned’s memory at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Venice, Florida,  will be followed by a Mass at Christ Episcopal Church, in Westerly in November.
