NEW LONDON, CT - The New London Cultural District, in collaboration with City Councilor Akil Peck, will celebrate on July 9 the installation of permanent musical drums adjacent to Parade Plaza as a tribute to renowned percussionist, Dwight ‘The Professor’ Baldwin.
Drums and benches will be installed on two brick pads along the grass area adjacent to the plaza where many public events are held. An honorary Black Heritage Trail marker also will be installed between two existing bronze sculptures depicting the City’s role in the slave ship Amistad story and maritime commerce and defense.

The ceremony, scheduled for 11 a.m., Sunday, July 9 during Sailfest, will be followed by cultural performances by talented artists. Family and friends of Baldwin will pay tribute to Baldwin's legacy.
“‘The Professor’ became a cultural icon for many of us in New London and across the region through his work to pass along the traditions of African drumming,” said Peck, who led the effort to honor Baldwin’s contributions to the city and its youth. “He deserves this permanent recognition and I’m proud that the city and the Cultural District are bringing this project to fruition.”

The drums and benches, installed courtesy of the New London Cultural District, are intended to honor Baldwin and serve as reminders of his dedication to the city’s youth and his contributions to fostering cultural appreciation and musical joy within the city.
Baldwin was a Pittsburgh native but grew up in New London and graduated from New London High School in 1971. He died in December 2021 in Riverdale, Georgia, at 69. He performed internationally as a professional percussionist and mentor to inner-city youth wherever he went.
Known as "The Professor," Baldwin wholeheartedly shared his passion for drumming with others. Through his leadership in Drum Circles, his teaching of the ABCs of Drumming, and his performances with his band, The Shades of Joy, he breathed life into the rich tapestry of culture, history, and rhythm within the people of New London, especially the youth. His unwavering efforts to promote cultural awareness, African history, and self-esteem were a testament to his inclusivity and deep belief in the transformative power of music.
