Proud to TRI

Youth Fitness- Triathlon combines swimming, biking, and running for ages 5-17

Proud to TRI

The New London Recreation Department is pleased to announce the Proud to TRI youth triathlon will take place at Camp Harkness State Park in Waterford. With the help of the Waterford Parks & Recreation, Norwich Recreation, and Ledyard Parks & Recreation, this event attracts hundreds of young participants to a sport that combines swimming, biking, and running in a fun environment. We continue to promote physical activity which is crucial for good health and it is especially important for children if they are to grow into healthy adults. Allowing children to experience a competition where they can get fit, have fun, and challenge themselves is inspiring!

The focus of our youth events is on PARTICIPATION rather than competition. The age ranges from 5-17 and consists of a swim, bike, run with distances varying according to the different age groups. Medals will be awarded to every finisher with music and food to follow. The swim course is in an ocean and suitable for all levels of swimmers. Life jackets are acceptable. Our youngest participants even bike with training wheels! Many of these children have started with two sport races and are now taking on the challenge of three sports. The Proud to TRI event is the final of a three-series race called the “Triple Crown”. There will be a special recognition for the youth who accomplish all three events for the “Triple Crown” award.

These racers complete the course with guidance from staff and volunteers and encouragement from the spectators. These children are an inspiration for all of us who think “I could never do that”. Be a part of this amazing event.
