NEW LONDON, CT — Recent death notices from New London County:

Mary “Lou” Carver Johnson, 99, of Niantic, formerly of Quaker Hill, worked as a telephone operator during World War II and spent many years hiking with Waterford's "Over the Hill Gang."

Libby Smith, 61, formerly of Waterford, had along career in education, which included teaching in the Montville school system.

William Scarano, Sr., 101 of Groton, served during World War II and received the Navy Commendation medal along with several other awards.

Beverly M. Wilson, 90, of North Stonington, was a volunteer, gardener, and graduate of Connecticut College.

Mary Gannon, 89, of Waterford, was a dedicated volunteer and a member of St. Sophia Church for over 60 years.
